COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. ‘Buckeye Spotlight’ recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Throughout the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Ohio State Athletics continues to celebrate exceptional female student-athletes and women’s teams throughout history, highlighting a new moment or person every week. This week, the success of the women’s rowing program is highlighted with the seven former student athletes who have been inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame. Here are this week’s Buckeye Spotlight student-athletes:
2022-23 OSU Scholar Athletes
- A total of 765 student athletes were named OSU Scholar Athletes this year
- Sophie Jaques (women’s hockey) and Kaleb Romero (wrestling) were named Big Ten Medal of Honor winners
- Several Ohio State Athletes earned postgraduate scholarships and awards
The Ohio State Department of Athletics recognized 765 outstanding scholar-athletes and teams with postgraduate scholarships and awards this evening at the 2023 Scholar-Athlete Awards.

Jacob Pasteur | Men’s Volleyball | Jr. | Westminster, Maryland
- Helped the Buckeyes clinch a share of the MIVA Regular Season Title, Ohio State’s 28th all-time
- Reached 1,000 career kills in 3-0 win over Purdue Fort Wayne
- Currently at No. 15 all-time in career assists with 1,009
- Led Buckeyes with 23 kills last week

Emily Ruck | Softball | Jr. | Westerville, Ohio
- Ruck pitched 16.0 innings and went 2-0 with two complete games last weekend in helping Ohio State to a series win over Rutgers
- The junior from Westerville, Ohio allowed just four earned runs and two extra base hits as Ohio State won on Saturday, 3-2, and Sunday, 4-3.
- She improved her record to 7-5 on the season.

Daniella Santos | Women’s Track & Field | Jr. | Hilliard, Ohio
- Daniella Santos won the 1500m at the Tennessee Invite this past weekend, despite less-than-ideal weather.
- She ran a personal-best time of 4:23.14, which is a top-100 time in the country this season (81st).

Ed Shean | Men’s Lacrosse | So. | Seal Beach, Calif.
- Ed Shean led Ohio State with a career-high tying five goals in last Friday’s game against Maryland. The game marked the third time this season he has scored five goals in a single contest.
- His five-goal game tied for the most goals scored against the Terrapins by an Ohio State player in series history.
- Shean leads the Buckeyes with 24 goals on the year. He leads the country with a .706 shot percentage.
Danielle Willson | Women’s Tennis | Gr. | Newport Beach, Calif.
- Danielle Willson posted a team-best five wins, with three in singles and two in doubles, as the Buckeyes went 3-0 last week.
- She won all three singles matches in straight sets and clinched the Senior Day victory against Iowa with a court five win.
- In doubles, Willson and Kolie Allen posted wins vs. Kentucky and Iowa, clinching the point vs. the Hawkeyes with a court one win.
- Willson, in her first year in the Scarlet and Gray, is 6-0 in dual matches and 13-6 overall in singles. She has posted a 10-2 dual record in doubles and is 14-6 overall.
- The three wins last week moved the Buckeyes’ winning streak to seven, as the squad stayed undefeated in the Big Ten (7-0) and improved to 15-5 on the year. A weekend trip north with matches at Michigan State Friday and No. 6 Michigan Sunday are up next for the No. 7 Buckeyes.

JJ Tracy | Men’s Tennis | Sr. | Powell, Ohio
- Was a perfect 4-0 and helping the Buckeyes to a pair of huge road victories
- Won both of his singles matches, including posting the first singles win in the big 4-2 win at No. 4 Michigan on Sunday
- Also won both of his doubles matches with ease, winning 6-1 over Michigan State and 6-2 over Michigan
- Has a team-high 23 singles and doubles victories on the season and has won eight consecutive singles matches
