COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s tennis team welcomed visiting Nebraska to the Ty Tucker Tennis Center on Friday night for a matchup of Big Ten foes. The second-ranked Buckeyes handled the Cornhuskers 7-0, to maintain their strong start in Big Ten play.
The Buckeyes were led by three players holding a 2-0 record on the day including Robert Cash, Cannon Kingsley, and James Trotter. JJ Tracy, Alexander Bernard, and Jack Anthrop added tallies to the board with singles victories, helping the Buckeyes secure a clean sweep of the Cornhuskers.
Ohio State has now improved to 14-0 against the Cornhuskers since the two teams first matched up in 2002. The Buckeyes reach at least 20 wins for the 23rd consecutive season with Ty Tucker at the helm, and the 29th time program history.
Doubles
- The No. 36 ranked Buckeye duo on court two, Cash and Justin Boulais, were the first to break the Cornhuskers. The pair faced off against Nebraska’s Nic Wiedenhorn and Calvin Mueller and quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Cash and Boulais held on to win the match 6-3 and secure the Buckeyes first doubles win of the night.
- The pair of Kingsley and Trotter finished next on court three. The only break of the match came in the last game, when Trotter delivered a pair of forehand winners to clinch the doubles point for the Buckeyes, winning the match 6-4.
- The No. 3-ranked team of JJ Tracy and Andrew Lutschaunig played their first doubles match together since Jan. 20 on court one. The match ended in a 4-4 stalemate as neither side could earn a break in the match.
Singles
- Ohio State set the tone of the singles matches early, winning the first set on all six courts. The Buckeyes kept their foot on the peddle, racing their way to a clean sweep of the Cornhuskers.
- Court two finished first, as No. 25-ranked Trotter had his way against Cornhusker Leo Linquet. Trotter won the first set 6-2, and convincingly won the second 6-1 to put a second tally on the board for the Buckeyes. Trotter is now 18-0 in singles matches this year.
- On court one, No. 12-ranked Kingsley started hot and raced his way to 6-1 first set win against Nebraska’s Roni Hietaranta. Kingsley continued to set the pace of the match in set two and broke the Husker just in time to secure a 6-4 win to finish the match.
- Cash faced off against Nebraska’s William Gleason on court five and after climbing his way to a 6-4 first-set win, the New Albany, Ohio native added another tally for the Buckeyes with a 6-1 second set win. Cash continues his impressive senior season, moving to 15-1 in singles matches this season.
- Tracy finished next on court three, where he methodically moved his way to his win over Shunya Maruyama 6-3, 6-2. Tracy continues to have a solid junior campaign as the No. 15-ranked player in the country.
- Bernard outlasted Lars Johann in three sets 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to post a sixth point for the Buckeyes. Bernard is the No. 63-ranked player in the nation during his freshman campaign and continues to be solid in the Buckeyes lineup.
- On court six, Anthrop battled throughout the entire match, clawing his way to a 6-4 first set win. Then, after falling behind 5-2 in the second set to Mueller, the Buckeye won the next four games to take a 6-5 lead. Yet, he fell in the tiebreaker 7-6(5), and the match headed to a super-tiebreaker. Anthrop held strong and relied on his serve in the super-tiebreaker to win 10-7.
