
Ohio State Undefeated at Northwestern Duals

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State fencing teams were both undefeated at the Northwestern Duals this weekend in Evanston, Ill. The No. 6-ranked women were 7-0 Saturday and 5-0 Sunday, with wins over No. 5 Northwestern, No. 11 Temple and No. 13 Stanford highlighting day two. The No. 5-ranked men posted a 5-0 mark on the opening day and a 3-0 record Sunday.
The event wrapped up the regular season for the Buckeyes. The women are 39-8 on the year and the men have posted a 33-9 record.
Saturday
The Buckeye women posted a clean sweep of their team matchups, going 7-0, and dropped just one squad battle. Foil and sabre were 7-0, with epee 6-1. The foil squad combined for a 53-10 mark, with three Buckeyes notching double-digit wins: Alina Lee (14), Claire Teresa Galavotti (12) and Dasha Myroniuk (12). In epee, the Buckeyes totaled a 51-12 record. Julia Simikin had a team-high 11 wins, while Lucy Whittemore notched eight victories. In sabre, the Buckeyes were 45-18 as a squad. Julieta Toledo led the way with 11 wins, while Ele Perrier and Katherine Larimer each had eight victories.
For the 5-0 men, foil was 5-0, with epee and sabre both 4-1. The foil squad totaled a 39-6 mark, led by Solin Li with 11 wins and Ilya Ayupov with nine. Men's sabre was 33-12 on the day; Jack Price and Avin Rai had eight wins each to pace the squad. In epee, the Buckeyes were 31-14. Nowell Gibson was first with eight victories and three other Buckeyes had seven – Matthew Bülau, Henry Lange and Paul Veltrup.
Sunday
The women were 5-0, including 14-13 wins against both No. 13 Stanford and No. 5 Northwestern and a 17-10 victory over No. 11 Temple. The foil and epee squads posted 4-1 records, with sabre 3-2. Foil was first with a 29-16 mark and Myroniuk led the way with 10 wins, followed by Galavotti with nine. Epee had a 28-17 combined record and Karina Dyner and Yeva Mazur had seven victories to tie for first. Led by Toledo's 10 victories, sabre was 25-20 on the day.
The men were 3-0 as a team, with the foil and sabre squads undefeated and epee 2-1. The foilists combined for a 23-4 mark and Ayupov notched four wins to lead the squad. Sabre was 21-6 Sunday; Kelly Liu, Rai and Aaron Buergenthal each had three victories. For epee, the group was 17-10, led by Gibson with five wins and Kinley Lavenstein with four.
Postseason Up Next, Starting at Home
- The Central Collegiate Fencing Conference Championships will be held at Ohio State Feb. 25-26 in French Field House. Team competition is set for day one, with individuals competing on day two. Admission will be free.
- NCAA competition starts with regionals March 11 in Evanston, Ill., and the NCAA Championships will be March 23-26 in Durham, N.C.
