
OSU Places Second at B1Gs, Earns Two Gold Medals on Final Day

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Charlie Clark and Ruslan Gaziev each won gold medals on the final night of the Big Ten Championships as the No. 8 Buckeyes placed second overall with 1,290.5 points. This is the 14th consecutive season Ohio State has placed in the top three at the conference championships.
“I could not be more proud of our young men in the pool and on the boards,” said Director of Swimming and Diving Bill Dorenkott. “Our program has gone through a great deal of change over the past twelve months. For us to be in the hunt all the way through the last session of the meet is a testament to our culture.”
Over the course of the championships, Ohio State won 11 total medals: seven individual and four relay medals. Landing on the All-Big Ten First Team were Alex Quach, Pete Krusinski, James Ward, Ruslan Gaziev and Charlie Clark. On the All-Big Ten Second Team were Lyle Yost and Daniel Baltes.
Indiana won the Big Ten title with 1,595.5 points. The Buckeyes beat third-place Michigan, which finished with 1,163.0 points, by 127.5 points.
Meet Notes
- It was an exciting beginning to the night for the Buckeyes, with Charlie Clark winning gold in the 1650 free for the second straight year. Clark’s time of 14:41.75 is an NCAA B cut time and he had a nine-plus second lead over the second-place finisher.
- Alex Metzler (15:03.42) finished sixth and Mason Edmund (15:05.62) finished eighth in the 1650 free A final. Both are NCAA B standard times.
- Sam Campbell won the B-final of the 1650 free with an NCAA B cut time of 15:06.04.
- Thomas Watkins placed fifth in the 200 back with an NCAA B standard time of 1:41.69. Tristan Jankovics (1:44.88) finished seventh in the B final and Owen Conley (1:44.89) and Will Bansberg (1:44.94) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the C final.
- Ruslan Gaziev had a record-setting performance in the 100 free, winning gold with an NCAA A cut time of 41.38. His time is an OSU program record, a Big Ten Championships meet record and a Canham Natatorium pool record.
- James Ward placed fifth in the 100 free A final, touching the wall at 42.39, which is an NCAA B standard time.
- Tomas Navikonis finished third in the B final of the 100 free with an NCAA B standard time of 43.14. Daniel Baltes won the C final, finishing in an NCAA B cut time of 43.25.
- Pete Krusinski finished fifth in the 200 breast C final with a time of 1:59.34.
- Chachi Gustafson took sixth in the 200 fly A final, finishing in an NCAA B standard time of 1:43.21.
- After leading most of the way, JP Khouzam finished second in the B final of the 200 fly, turning in an NCAA B cut time of 1:44.32.
- Clayton Chaplin placed fourth in the platform dive with an overall score of 404.05. Lyle Yost placed sixth with a score of 381.15. Both are NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
- Mo Noaman won the consolation final of the platform dive with an NCAA Zones qualifying score of 365.30.
