
Ohio State Tied for 1st After Day 1 at Big Tens

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men’s swimming and diving team is atop the Big Ten Conference standings after Day 1 of the championship meet, which is taking place over four days at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Buckeyes have 118 team points and are tied with Indiana for first place. Michigan, with 112 points, is third with a trio of teams – Wisconsin, Minnesota and Purdue – tied for fourth with 100 points.
Two relays were contested on this first evening and the Buckeyes were victorious in the 200 medley relay for the second consecutive year and third in the 800 freestyle.
The 200 medley relay team of So. Alex Quach, Jr. Pete Krusinski, Sr. James Ward and Jr. Ruslan Gaziev won with the third-fastest time in school history while setting a new Canham Natatorium record of 1:23.03. The time was an NCAA “A” qualifying time.
The 800 freestyle relay featured Gaziev leading off followed by Fr. Tomas Navikonis, Ward and Sr. Thomas Watkins. The quartet placed third behind Indiana and Michigan in 6:16.26, the fourth-fastest time in school history.
Upcoming Thursday
The championships continue with morning preliminaries in four events beginning at 10:30 a.m.: the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 1-meter springboard. Thursday finals begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include the 400 medley relay.
