Buckeyes Shut Out Auburn 4-0 to Start ITA National Indoors

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 6-seeded Ohio State women's tennis team opened play at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle with a 4-0 win over Auburn Friday morning. The Buckeyes won the doubles point and three straight-set singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals. Ohio State will play the winner of the match between No. 3 seed Texas A&M and San Diego Saturday.
Quoting head coach Melissa Schaub
"Everyone here is good. We played a very solid doubles point to start out the day and got off to good starts in singles. Every match is going to be about being tough and competing as hard as we can. Tomorrow will be another battle."
In Doubles
- Wins on courts one and three gave the Buckeyes the doubles point.
- The duo of Kolie Allen and Danielle Willson rolled at No. 3, downing DJ Bennett and Kaitlyn Carnicella, 6-1, winning the final six games.
- The No. 37-ranked Buckeye tandem of Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff topped No. 8 Ariana Arseneault and Carolyn Ansari, 6-4, to clinch the point. The Buckeye duo was down a break, 2-3, but won four games in a row to take a 5-3 lead. The Tigers won the next game but the Buckeyes closed it out.
- The court two match was on serve when play was suspended.
In Singles
- Ohio State won five of the six first sets and closed out the first three completed matches for the victory.
- Fifth-year seniors Kolie Allen and Isabelle Boulais put the Buckeyes ahead 3-0.
- On court four, Allen topped No. 95 Kaitlyn Carnicella, 6-4, 6-1, and on court three, Boulais defeated DJ Bennett, 6-4, 6-2.
- Shelly Bereznyak, ranked No. 105, clinched the win. After shutting out Angella Okutoyi in the first set, they went to a tiebreak in the second set, with Bereznyak holding in the final game for the breaker. With the tiebreak tied at five, Bereznyak won the last two points for the victory.
- The match on court one was abandoned in a third set, with the others late in the second when play was called.
