COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State is set to open its 125th season of basketball this Monday when it hosts Oakland of the Horizon League. Tip-off is slated for a 7 p.m. tip at Value City Arena inside the Schottenstein Center and it will be streamed exclusively on B1G+. Matt Goldman, Joey Feerer and Tyler Danburg will call the action.
- This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs. The Buckeyes are officially 2-0 all-time against the Golden Grizzles
- The first ever game hosted in Value City Arena was against Oakland on Nov. 13, 1998, where Ohio State claimed an 89-61 victory.
- The most recent meeting came in the 2010-11 season when the Buckeyes rolled to a 92-63 victory in Columbus. Ohio State was ranked No. 2 in the country at the time and was led by Deshaun Thomas and his 17 points. Five others also scored in double figures.
- Ohio State is 102-21 all-time in season openers and 105-17 in home openers. Under Holtmann, the Buckeyes are 6-0 in season-openers, and they have not lost an opener in 19 seasons.
- The Buckeyes are coming off a 16-19 season but it ended on a high note as they won five of their final seven games, including advancing to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Chicago.
- The Buckeye return eight letterwinners but just 38 percent of its scoring from last season.
- Ohio State boasts one of the youngest rosters in the country as they are tied for the 11th youngest roster according to age.
- The sophomore trio of Bruce Thornton, Roddy Gayle Jr. and Felix Okpara all gained valuable experience last season and were key in the team's Big Ten Tournament run. Thornton started all 35 games last season while Gayle and Okpara both played in all 35 games as well.
- The team added three transfers that will fill key roles. Minnesota transfer Jamison Battle is a proven wing scorer. Baylor transfer Dale Bonner is an experienced guard that will provide depth at point guard and Penn State transfer Evan Mahaffey is one of the most athletic players on the roster and will provide flexibility throughout the lineup.
- The Buckeyes added the No. 8 recruiting class in 2023 with Scotty Middleton, Devin Royal, Taison Chatman and Austin Parks.
