Ohio State Advances with 1-0 Win at Michigan State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 6-seed Ohio State (6-6-5) traveled to No. 3 Michigan State (7-2-7) for the second time in a span of 11 days and came away with its another win over the Spartans. The Buckeyes earned a 1-0 result in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Big Ten Tournament at DeMartin Stadium in East Lansing Friday.

The Buckeyes handed the Spartans their only loss of the regular season Oct. 24 (3-2). Ohio State is on a three-match win streak with the win.

Ohio State has won the last four meetings with the Spartans and are now 6-5 all-time in Big Ten Tournament play against Michigan State.

How it Happened
There was not a great deal of action in the opening half with each team attempting just two shots, none of which were on frame.
Â
Both teams got a shot on frame early in the second half before the Buckeyes put one in the net on its second attempt at Michigan State keeper Zac Kelly.

Andre Roberts, who earlier in the day was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, quickly gathered a rebound right out front to put the Buckeyes up 1-0 in the 54'. Sophomore Marko Borkovic was credited with an assist after his header from a long cross issued by Parker Grinstead bounced free before Roberts put it away.

The goal was the third of the season for Roberts and his first in postseason competition. Borkovic has six assists for his career and five this season.

Max Trejo earned his fifth career solo shutout and fourth of the season in net for the Buckeyes.

In addition to Roberts, four other Buckeyes were recognized earlier in the day by the Big Ten Conference coaches for their achievements in 2023.

Senior Laurence Wootton repeated as the Big Ten Midfielder of the Year and was named First Team All-Big Ten. Wootton is a four-time First Team All-Big Ten selection, one of six all-time in the Big Ten and the first from Ohio State. Brian Maisonneuve, head coach of the Buckeyes. is one of the six, he did so from 1991-94 at Indiana.

Michael Adedokun, Siggy Magnusson and Luciano Pechota were named to the Second Team All-Big Ten squad as well. Â Â
The No. 6 Buckeyes will travel to No. 2 Penn State next Wednesday in the 2023 Big Ten Tournament Semifinals. The Nittany Lions earned a 3-1 win over Rutgers in State College, Pennsylvania, Friday. The match will be televised by the Big Ten Network. Match time has not been determined. Â Â Â Â
