
Buckeyes Fall 30-24 in Ann Arbor

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- No. 2 Ohio State (11-1, 8-1) fell 30-24 at No. 3 Michigan (12-0, 9-0) Saturday at Michigan Stadium in the 119th edition of The Game.
The Buckeyes rallied to tie the matchup at 17-all in the third quarter but the Wolverines reclaimed the lead and held on for the win.
Ohio State quarterback Kyle McCord completed 18-of-30 passes for 271 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His top target was Marvin Harrison Jr. with five catches for 118 yards and a score.
TreVeyon Henderson paced the Ohio State ground game with 19 carries for 60 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Steele Chambers led the Buckeyes with 13 tackles.
First Quarter
No. 3 Michigan 7, No. 2 Ohio State 3
Michigan won the pregame coin toss and deferred to the second half, giving the Buckeyes the ball to start The Game in Ann Arbor.
After a touchback, the Buckeyes drove to the OSU31 before Jesse Mirco delivered a 34-yard punt to the UM35.
The Wolverines were not able to move the ball for a first down on its opening possession and punted it back to Ohio State. The Buckeyes took over at their 24 after a 36-yard boot and an Emeka Egbuka fair catch.
Kyle McCord then completed the first pass of the game for a first down after an 11-yard catch by running back TreVeyon Henderson over the middle to the OSU37.
Another completion to receiver Xavier Johnson gave the Buckeyes a fourth-and-1 at the OSU46. The Buckeyes elected to punt, this time a 33-yarder to the UM21.
Ohio State’s defense held again, forcing the Wolverines to punt. After a 71-yard kick reached the endzone for a touchback, the Buckeyes started their third possession from the OSU20.
McCord threw a pass to the left that was intercepted by Michigan’s Will Johnson, who returned it 18 yards to the OSU7.
The Wolverines moved to the OSU1 after three-consecutive rushes, the third of which was reviewed and upheld as a stop by the Buckeyes short of the goal line.
Michigan then went for it on fourth-and-1 and put the first points on the board after a Blake Corum 1-yard rush up the middle for a 7-0 Wolverine lead with 5:36 remaining in the opening quarter. The short drive covered 7 yards on four plays.
After two Henderson rushes for a combined 6 yards, McCord found receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. for a gain of 24 yards down the right side to the UM45.
Tight end Cade Stover then caught a pass for a short 3-yard gain. Michigan was called for a hand-to-the-face penalty that moved the ball to the UM27 after the 15-yard penalty was assessed.
The Buckeyes called timeout with 2:21 on the clock facing a third-and-7 following a 3-yard Henderson rush to the UM24.
After an incompletion, Ohio State scored on a 43-yard Jayden Fielding field goal to make it 7-3 Wolverines with 2:13 left. The drive covered 51 yards on nine plays over 3:23.
Michigan started from its 25 after a touchback. The Wolverines posted back-to-back first downs, their first of the game, the second of which was a 16-yard gain over the middle to the UM36.
Ohio State called its second timeout before a Michigan incompletion and a short rush for 2 yards ended the quarter with the Wolverines in possession at the OSU46.
Second Quarter
No. 3 Michigan 14, No. 2 Ohio State 10
Michigan completed its second scoring drive of the half with a 22-yard reception from J.J. McCarthy to Roman Wilson to put the Wolverines up 14-3 with 10:22 on the clock. The drive covered 75 yards on 14 plays over 6:51.
Ohio State took over on its 27 after a 27-yard return by Xavier Johnson.
McCord drove the Buckeyes to the UM26 after a DeaMonte Trayanum rush of 9, a 32-Stover reception and a 6-yard catch by Egbuka.
Henderson then caught a short pass over the middle for 7 yards before Michigan was called for holding on a Johnson rush.
From the UM7 after the penalty, Trayanum rushed up the middle for 4 yards before McCord found Egbuka for a 3-yard scoring grab to the right corner of the endzone. The seven-play, 73-yard scoring drive used 3:50 and made it 14-10 Michigan with 6:27 left in the half.
After a touchback, Michigan took over from its 25 and moved to near midfield two plays later on a 19-yard completion to Cornelius Johnson.
Ohio State’s Jack Sawyer then sacked McCarthy three plays later for a 5-yard loss to force a punt from the UM49. Ohio State was pinned at its 2-yard line following a 49-yard kick by Michigan’s Tommy Doman.
McCord started to move the Buckeyes with 3:23 left in the half. Four plays later, he delivered a 44-yard pass to Harrison Jr. down the right side to give Ohio State the ball at the UM42.
Ohio State called its final timeout after a Stover grab gave the Buckeyes the ball at the UM34 facing a fourth-and-2.
The half ended after an Ohio State 52-yard field goal attempt missed to the left.
Third Quarter
No. 3 Michigan 24, No. 2 Ohio State 17
After a kickoff return to the UM22, the Wolverines put together back-to-back plays of 20 yards, one via the air ahead of another via the rush to give Michigan a first down at the OSU37.
Ohio State’s defense then stopped the Wolverines at the OSU32 before Michigan converted on a 50-yard field goal to increase its lead to 17-10 with 11:43 on the clock. The drive covered 46 yards on six plays over the first 3:10 of the half.
McCord was sacked on Ohio State’s first play of the half for a loss of 3 yards qbut he responded with a 14-yard completion to Harrison Jr. and a 15-yarder to Egbuka to the UM46.
Henderson then posted rushes of 4, 5 and 3 yards for a first down at the UM34. Trayanum then got the call for a 12-yard rush around the left side for another first down to the UM22.
Trayanum then went for rushes of 6 and 5 yards to the UM11 and another first down. Henderson then carried for 8 yards to the UM3 and then tied the game at 17-all on a 3-yard rush up the middle.
The drive covered 75 yards on 12 plays over 6:08. The last eight plays gained 46 yards, all on the ground.
McCarthy then drove the Wolverines to the OSU41 after a scramble for 15 yards. He then connected with tight end AJ Barner for 18 yards over the middle to the OSU22.
Corum then put the Wolverines back on top with a 22-yard touchdown rush up the middle for a 24-17 Michigan lead with 1:55 on the clock. The drive covered 75 yards on seven plays over 3:40.
The Buckeyes were forced to punt on its next possession. After a 43-yard Mirco kick and a 5-yard penalty for illegal formation called against the Buckeyes, Michigan took over at its 36.
The quarter ended after a 5-yard rush and another 5-yard Michigan pass play for a first down at the UM36.
Fourth Quarter
Michigan opened the final quarter with a 34-yard pass from running back Donovan Edwards to Colston Loveland to the OSU20. The Wolverines were stopped at their 20 and kicked a 38-yard field goal to push lead to 27-17 with 11:57 left.
The Buckeyes started from their 35 after Michigan’s ensuing kickoff went out of bounds.
Henderson got the Buckeyes a first down after runs of 5 and 7 yards before McCord connected with Julian Fleming for 28 yards down the right sideline to the UM25.
After a Henderson gain of 2, Xavier Johnson rushed up the middle for 9 yards for a first down to the UM14.
After a rush for no gain by Henderson, McCord found Harrison Jr. for a 14-yard touchdown toss over the middle to make it 27-24 Wolverines with 8:05 remaining. The drive covered 65 yards on eight plays over 3:52.
Michigan went to the ground game and drove to the OSU25 before an Ohio State timeout with 2:07 left to play. The Buckeyes called their second timeout after a 2-yard Michigan rush.
Ohio State stopped Michigan at the OSU19 and called its final timeout with 1:10 left.
The Wolverines then kicked a 37-field goal to take a 30-24 lead with 1:05 left.
The Buckeyes started from their 19 with a minute left.
McCord, after an incompletion, found Harrison Jr. for 22 yards to the OSU40. The next play was a 21-yard catch by Flemming, who then fumbled but Egbuka recovered at the UM37.
The drive ended when McCord was intercepted at the UM21 with 25 second left.
