Growing up just south of Nashville, Tenn., Cam Thiesing was one of very few kids playing hockey in the area. The Nashville Predators were a newer team in the NHL, and because of that, they didn't gain attraction from many kids. Thiesing, however, was introduced to hockey by his father, who played Division III college hockey in Wisconsin. Hockey skills are not the only thing his father passed down; Thiesing also wears number 15 to match his father.
Â
As a kid, Thiesing's favorite NHL team was the Predators, and he often went to games with his father. His favorite player when he was very young was Paul Kariya, and more recently his favorite player is Filip Forsberg. While those two are Thiesing's favorite players, he looks up to Viktor Arvidsson and Brayden Point to help model his game. On Point, Thiesing said "I admire how he plays very much."
Â
Growing up, Thiesing moved around to maximize his hockey talent in new cities. He first moved to Wisconsin prior to his freshman year of high school to play for Team Illinois. His team was right by the border, so even though he was living in Wisconsin, his team was in Illinois. Thiesing played for Team Illinois through his junior year of high school, and during his junior year, also played for the Chicago Mission.
Â
For his senior year of high school, Thiesing went on to play junior hockey instead of doing one more year of youth hockey. He began playing junior hockey in Chippewa Falls, Wis., for the Chippewa Steel in the NAHL. After Chippewa Falls, he moved to Green Bay, Wis., to play two more years of junior hockey in the USHLÂ with the Gamblers before coming to Ohio State.
Â
Though Thiesing was moving around the country to play hockey, it was not the only sport he was involved in during high school. Being from a track family, Thiesing would come home to Nashville after his hockey seasons and run track as well as play lacrosse throughout middle and high school.
Â
After his time playing junior hockey, Thiesing decided to continue his hockey career at Ohio State. He explained that Ohio State originally appealed to because it was the closest Division I school to Tennessee that offered hockey. In addition to its location, Thiesing described Ohio State as 'the best of both worlds' with its combination of academics and athletics. He said Ohio State 'just felt like home' when he got to know the staff and community.
Â
Alongside hockey at Ohio State, Thiesing is a communications major. When asked what it is like balancing school with hockey, he explained "it's very manageable," especially with all the resources at Ohio State.
Â
During the off-season, you can find Thiesing hunting. He explained he "will go any day," and does go hunting almost every day when it is hunting season.
Â
Fans may not have known how Thiesing got to Ohio State, but with all of the moves and changes in his life, he finally found a place that feels like a second home. He is not only a great hockey player and captain, but a student as well. Thiesing also always finds the time to balance hockey and school with things he enjoys like hunting. This captain has many layers and he's not just the player fans see on the ice.
