Weekly highlight of the student-athletes behind the major moments in Ohio State Athletics
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. 'Buckeye Spotlight' recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Addie Engel | Jr. | Women's Cross Country | Springfield, Ohio
- Engel defended her Big Ten title, winning the 6K race Friday in a time of 20:47.9, nearly 10 seconds ahead of the runner-up. She won the program's first championship a season ago.
- She earned her third First Team All-Big Ten accolade. She is the first Buckeye to earn three All-Big Ten honors and the only Buckeye with more than one first team accolade.
- She recorded her fifth Top 2 finish this season and the 11th of her career at the conference meet. She has been in the Top 16 in 19 of her last 20 races, with the lone exception when she ran as an individual at the 2021 NCAA Championships.
- Engel and the Buckeyes, including Daniella Santos who placed eighth to earn her second All-Big Ten accolade, will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Nov. 10 in Madison, Wis.
Anna McClure | Women's Volleyball | So. | Champaign, Ill.
- Sophomore defensive specialist Anna McClure earned her first career start last Wednesday against Northwestern as she averaged 2.14 digs/set last week through seven sets of action.
- Against Northwestern, McClure recorded a then career-high five digs in just three sets as well as the first assist of her career.
- At Michigan, McClure reached 10 digs for the first time in her collegiate career, doing so in four sets.
Jenn Gardiner | Women's Hockey | Gr. | Surrey, B.C.
- Jenn Gardiner led the Buckeyes with six points in the top-five matchup against No. 4 Minnesota last weekend.
- She scored two goals in the first game, including the overtime game-winning goal to give Ohio State the 4-3 win.
- Gardiner tallied an additional three points in Saturday's game and was on the ice for nine of the Buckeyes' 10 goals of the series.
Lyle Yost | Men's Swimming & Diving | Gr. | Shaker Heights, Ohio
- Reigning national 1-meter champion Lyle Yost impressed on the boards as the No. 14 Buckeyes opened the season with a 193.5-178.5 upset victory over No. 11 Virginia Tech.
- Yost scored a 427.05 on the 1-meter springboard to win the event, defeating second-place finisher, teammate Tyler Read (337.80), by almost 100 points.
- Yost also turned in a strong performance on platform as well, earning an overall score of 400.10, besting second-place Kylie Flory (351.55) by almost 50 points.
- Both of Yost's scores from the weekend are NCAA Zones qualifying scores.
Josephine Panitz | Women's Swimming & Diving | Gr. | Armonk, N.Y.
- Josephine Panitz raced to three individual wins as the No. 5 Buckeyes dominated No. 17 Virginia Tech, 226-135, to open the 2023-24 season.
- Panitz earned two wins on night one of the two-day dual meet. She placed first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.36. Panitz also won the 100 breast, recording an NCAA B standard time of 1:00.13 and finishing over three seconds ahead of Hannah Bach (1:03.19), who placed second.
- On day two, Panitz picked up a win in the 200 breast. She finished in a time of 2:14.09, which was almost five seconds faster than teammate Reese Dehen (2:19.93), who placed second.
Zubin Jha | Sr. | Men's Cross Country | Worthington, Ohio
- Jha led the Buckeye men at the Big Ten Championships in Madison, Wis., last Friday, finishing the 8K in 18th place with a time of 24:54.6.
- He is the first Buckeye to finish in the Top 20 at the conference meet since 2016.
- Jha has been the first Ohio State finisher in three of his four appearances at the Big Ten Championships.
- Postseason action continues for the Buckeyes at the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals Nov. 10 in Madison, Wis.
Logan Terness | Jr. | Men's Hockey | North Vancouver, British Columbia
- In the Buckeyes' 1-0-1 weekend at No. 20 Omaha, Terness had a .96 goals-against average and .970 save percentage. He.
- In game one, he had 34 saves on 36 shots through overtime, which ended 2-2. He did not allow a goal in a seven-round shootout won by Ohio State, 1-0.
- In game two, a 4-0 victory, Terness recorded his second career shutout and first as a Buckeye, stopping all 30 shots he faced.
- Terness and the No. 13-ranked Buckeyes return home and to Big Ten play this weekend, hosting Michigan State Friday and Saturday.
Nick Feldman | Wrestling | R-Fr. | Quarryville, Pennsylvania
- Made his first highly-anticipated appearance in the final match at heavyweight in the annual Wrestle-Offs last week
- Sat out last year with injury as No. 1 ranked incoming recruit
- Recorded a 20-4 win by technical fall in his debut
- Will head to the Clarion Open Sunday in season-opening event for the Buckeyes
Logan Stieber | Asst. Coach Wrestling | Monroeville, Ohio
- Elected to the National Wrestling Hall of Fame, Class of 2024 as a Distinguished Member
- Won four individual State of Ohio titles and one high school team championship
- Also won four individual NCAA titles and one team (2015) national championship
- Added to the Ohio State coaching staff as a full-time assistant for the 2023-24 season
Delaney Lawler | Field Hockey | Graduate | Moorestown, N.J.
- Lawler established a new program record when he started her 88th career game on Oct. 22 in Ohio State's regular season finale vs. Bellarmine.
- A fifth-year senior, she has helped the Buckeyes to one of their best regular seasons in over 10 years.
- The Buckeyes are 13-5 overall and will start play at the Big Ten Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Thursday when they meet fourth-seeded Penn State at 11 a.m.
Derek Keiser | Rifle | Senior | Vienna, W.Va.
- Keiser had a season-best aggregate score of 1182 for Ohio State as it held its first home meet of the 2023-24 season last weekend against Memphis and Morehead State.
- Keiser's best score came in the air rifle, where he equaled his career-best score of 597.
- The Buckeyes' total of 4705 topped Morehead State and fell just five shy of Memphis.
Cole Young | Men's Volleyball | Jr. | Powell, Ohio
- Led the Buckeyes over the weekend in three matches against visiting McMaster University.
- The junior honorable mention All-American and First Team All-MIVA selection hit .480 against the team from Canada.
- Also added three aces and four blocks against the Marauders.
- Ohio State is the defending MIVA Tournament Champions after sharing the league's regular-season title.
- The Buckeyes advanced to the second round of the 2023 NCAA Championships.
