Buckeyes Fall Short in FOX Debut

Ohio State and Michigan played the first-ever Big Ten match on FOX on Sunday.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes (8-13, 5-7 B1G) fell in four sets (25-20, 22-25, 21-25, 22-25) against Michigan (4-17, 2-10 B1G) on Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor in the teams' lone meeting of the season. This was the first Big Ten match in conference history to be broadcast on FOX.Â

Ohio State only trailed one point in the first set, fending off multiple Michigan pushes to earn a 25-20 set win. The Wolverines led the majority of a close second set and evened the match with a 25-22 set win. Michigan won the third set by a 25-21 margin by scoring the final three points. The Buckeyes led much of the fourth set but the Wolverines won by a 25-22 margin by scoring the final seven points to steal the set.

Emily Londot recorded 10+ kills for the 19th time and 20+ kills for the 10th this season (20) as she was the first in the match to do so, surpassing 10 in the second set. She added 12 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Anna McClure totaled a career-high 10 digs. Rylee Rader earned her sixth match with double-figure kills (13) this season. Mia Tuman posted her sixth double-double of the season with 40 assists and 10 digs.

How it Happened
Ohio State opened scoring and used a 3-0 run to take an early 5-2 lead before Michigan tied the set at six and took its first lead at 7-6. The Buckeyes responded with the next three points, but the Wolverines tied the set again at 11. OSU held the 15-12 advantage at the media timeout. UM tied the set at 15 and then the Buckeyes responded with the next three points to force a Michigan timeout. The teams traded points out of the timeout and Ohio State capped a 25-20 set win on a Wolverines net violation.

Michigan scored the first three points in the second set and took an early 8-3 lead. Ohio State used a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to one at 10-9, prompting a UM timeout, before tying the set at 11 on a kill from Chelsea Thorpe. The Wolverines took the lead back with back-to-back points and the Buckeyes called timeout trailing 18-15. UM used a 3-0 run to take a 22-17 lead and force a second OSU timeout. The Buckeyes got within two at 24-22 but the Wolverines evened the match with a 25-22 set win.

Thorpe scored to begin the third set as the Buckeyes scored the first two points. Ohio State used a 4-0 run amidst a Michigan timeout to take a 9-4 lead. OSU called timeout after a 4-0 UM run trimmed the Buckeyes' lead to 9-8. The Wolverines tied the set at nine out of the timeout and took their first lead of the set at 14-13. The teams traded points with OSU trailing by one or two points before back-to-back UM points forced a Buckeye timeout down 20-17. Ohio State strung together three consecutive points to get within one at 21-20 as Michigan called timeout. The Wolverines scored the final three points of the set to take a 25-21 set win.

OSU strung together an extended 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. UM used a 3-0 run to cut its deficit in half at 15-12, prompting an Ohio State timeout. The teams traded scores before back-to-back OSU points gave the Buckeyes a 22-18 lead, forcing a Michigan timeout. The Wolverines scored the next three points out of that timeout to get within one at 22-21 before OSU called timeout and then scored the final four points to win the set 25-22.
