Team Scarlet Holds On To Win Wrestle-Offs, 17-16

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Team Scarlet held on to down Team Gray 17-16 in the annual Ohio State Wrestle Offs Thursday at the Covelli Center. The Buckeyes will use the results to help determine the lineup for the 2023-24 season.

The season officially opens Nov. 5 at the Clarion (Pa.) Open.

How it Happened

125 - Brendan McCrone (Scarlet) def. Peyton Fenton (Gray) | D, 3-0
There was no score after the first period. McCrone chose the down position to start the second and scored the first points of the match on a reversal to take a 2-0 lead. Fenton started from the down position to open the third period but could not earn the escape. With a point for riding time, McCrone won by decision, 3-0.

133 - No. 9 Nic Bouzakis (Gray) def. Andre Gonzales (Scarlet) | D, 7-6
Bouzakis got a quick takedown before a Gonzales escape made it 3-1 Scarlet. Bouzakis added an escape and a takedown to lead 7-2 in the second. Gonzales escaped to open the third to make it 7-3 Bouzakis. Gonzales added a late takedown but it was not enough. Bouzakis won by decision, 7-6.

141 - No. 8 Jesse Mendez (Scarlet) def. Brandon Cannon (Gray) | D, 5-2
There was no scoring in the first period. Cannon started the second from the down position and scored first with an escape to lead 1-0. Mendez chose bottom to start the third and evened the match with an escape. A late takedown gave Mendez the win 5-2 after an added point for riding time and a Cannon escape.

149 - No. 6 Dylan D'Emilio (Gray) def. Gavin Brown (Scarlet) |  MD, 11-2
D'Emilio opened the scoring with a takedown followed by a Brown escape for a 3-1 lead. D'Emilio built more than two and half minutes of riding time in the second period and chose down to open the third. He quickly escaped to take a 4-1 lead. D'Emilio added a takedown and finished off the match winning by major decision, 11-2

157 - No. 16 Paddy Gallagher (Scarlet) def. TJ Schierl (Gray) | TF, 15-0
Gallagher opened the scoring with a takedown and then added a four-point near fall for a 7-0 lead. He added another takedown and led 11-0 after the first period. Gallagher then finished off the match to win by technical fall, 15-0.

165 - Isaac Wilcox (Scarlet) def. Carter Chase (Gray) D, 6-1
Wilcox opened the scoring with an escape in the second period and that score held going into the third. Chase chose bottom to start the third and tied it at 1-all after a quick escape. No additional points were scored in the third sending the match to sudden victory where Wilcox got the win by decision 6-1 after a takedown and two-point near fall.

184 - No. 22 Seth Shumate (Scarlet) def. Ryder Rogotzke (Gray) | D, 13-8
Shumate went up 3-0 on a takedown after about a minute into the first period. Rogotzke escaped and chose bottom at the start of the second. He escaped to trail 3-2 and then took the lead, 5-2 with a takedown. Shumate then got the reversal to make it 5-all. A Rogotzke escape put him back up top, 6-5. Shumate got the reversal for a 7-6 advantage but Rogotzke tied it with an escape. Shumate scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds left to go up 10-7. Rogotzke escaped but Shumate added a late takedown to win by decision, 13-8

197 - Luke Geog (Gray) def. Mike Misita (Scarlet) | MD, 19-5
Geog led 6-2 after the first following a pair of takedowns and a couple Misita escapes. Misita added another escape in the second before a Geog takedown made it 9-3. From the neutral position to open the third, Geog added another takedown and finished off the match with a win by major decision, 19-5.

HWT - No. 20 Nick Feldman (Gray) def. Hogan Swenski (Scarlet) | TF, 20-4
Feldman went up 6-1 after the first on two takedowns and Swenski escape. Another takedown improved the lead to 10-1 and Feldman added another pair to lead 16-3 after the second. Feldman then finished off the match to win by technical fall, 20-4.
