
Three Medalist Finishes for Buckeye Women at Penn State

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women competed at the Garret Penn State Open in University Park, Pa., Saturday, with three picking up medalist finishes. Alina Lee won the foil title, while in epee, Montserrat Viveros and Yeva Mazur finished second and tied for third, respectively.

Women's Foil
Alina Lee was the No. 1 seed out of pools and ended the day as the foil champion. She posted a 15-7 win in the Round of 16 and advanced with a 15-9 quarterfinal victory. Lee notched another 15-7 victory in the semifinals before prevailing by one touch, 15-14, over a fencer from Penn State in the final.

Claire Teresa Galavotti finished fifth. The No. 2 seed, Galavotti posted a dominant 15-5 victory in the first round of elimination before falling 15-10 in the quarterfinals.

Three Buckeyes - Montserrat Viveros, Yeva Mazur and Catherine Zhou – reached the quarterfinals. Viveros had a 15-13 win in the quarterfinals and advanced to the final with a 15-11 victory in the semifinals. In the championship bout, the Buckeye fell, 15-8.

Mazur posted a 15-5 victory in the Round of 16 and won 9-7 in the round of eight before she was clipped 13-12 in the semifinals. Zhou posted a 15-13 win in the Round of 16 but fell to the eventual champion in her next bout, finishing sixth.
