Ohio State to Host NCAA Regional, Earns No. 1 Seed Overall

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State women’s hockey has earned the No. 1 overall seed in the 2022 NCAA Tournament and will host the first and second round of the tournament for the first time in program history. The Buckeyes will face the winner of the first-round Thursday evening matchup between Quinnipiac (25-9-3) and Syracuse (15-10-6) on Saturday, March 12 at 5 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink.
Overall, four WCHA teams made the now 11-team field. The Buckeyes earned the leagues’ automatic qualification with their Final Faceoff championship win this afternoon. No. 2 seed Minnesota will host a regional that includes a matchup between Minnesota Duluth and Harvard in the first round. Wisconsin will face Clarkson in the first round of the Northeastern Regional.
The 2022 NCAA Tournament begins March 10 at campus sites for the first and second rounds. The Final Faceoff will be held March 18-20 at Pegula Ice Arena at Penn State.
Ohio State will make its fourth NCAA Tournament run of the last five seasons. In 2018, Ohio State defeated Boston College, 2-0, in the first round to advance to the Frozen Four where they fell to Clarkson 1-0 in the tournament semifinal. As the WCHA Final Faceoff champions in 2020, they earned the league’s automatic bid and was the tournament’s No. 5 overall seed. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, canceled the tournament before it started. Last season, the Buckeyes earned the tournament’s No. 3 overall seed, defeating Boston College, 3-1, but falling to Wisconsin 3-2 in the Frozen Four semifinals.
Ohio State is 29-6-0 headed into the NCAA Tournament this season. The team is coming off a 3-2 overtime win over Minnesota in Sunday’s WCHA Final Faceoff Championship game. The Buckeyes defeated the No. 1 Gophers thanks to three unanswered goals to win the program’s second Final Faceoff trophy in the history of the program.
