COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State swimming and diving team continued its fine performances Friday at the NCAA Championships, picking up seven more All-America honors while adding 48 points to the team total, good for seventh-place heading into the final day of competition Saturday. Georgia Tech is hosting the championships at its McAuley Aquatic Center.
Ohio State has 131 points. Virginia continues to lead the team standings with 386.5 points.
Leading the way today was Jr. Hannah Bach, who swam in the championship final of the 100 breaststroke and placed sixth with a school-record time of 57.32. It was a terrific swim by Bach, who picked up 13 big team points for the Buckeyes as well as first-team All-America honors, as the final featured four of the eight-fastest American swimmers in the event.
It may not have been in the championship final, but the effort of Sr. Kristen Romano in the 400 IM to open the evening session was elite and historic. Romano has been chasing the 400 IM school record since she arrived on campus and tonight, she got it, winning the consolation final – her second consolation final win of this meet – in an Ohio State school-record time of 4:02.13.
In another points-producing, consolation final, So. Katherine Zenick swam a fine, 51.48 time in the 100 butterfly to place 13th and garner four more team points. Both Zenick and Romano picked up honorable mention All-America honors for their consolation swims.
A handful of Buckeyes were in the water today also competing in individual events. Sr. Katie Trace was 21st in the 400 IM in 4:09.26. Jr.Josie Panitz (38th; 1:00.52) and So. Janessa Mathews (43rd; 1:01.24) each swam in the 100 breaststroke. So. Catherine Russo was 32nd in the 100 butterfly in 52.37. And in the 100 backstroke, Fr. Nyah Funderburke just missed the consolation final by finishing 17th in 51.83 with Sr. Emily Crane 25th in 52.17.
In diving, Jr. Mackenzie Crawford placed 34th with 282.95 points.
The final event of the evening was the 400 medley relay. Ohio State’s team of Funderburke, Bach, Zenick and Jr. Amy Fulmer swam to a 3:28.49 time to place eighth, good for 22 team points and first-team All-America status.
Tomorrow
The championships conclude with seven events: 1,650 free, 200 back, 100 free, 200 breast, 200 fly, platform diving and 400 free relay.
