A Buckeye First: Back-to-Back Top 10 NCAA Finishes
3/19/2022 11:05:37 PM | Women's Swim & Dive
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The waves of success the Ohio State swimming and diving team has been riding under the leadership of director of swimming and diving Bill Dorenkott keep rolling in.
Saturday night, Dorenkott’s program celebrated another first-ever achievement by finishing in the Top 10 at the NCAA Championships for a second consecutive year. Ohio State’s 16-member contingent of swimmers and divers accumulated 165 points during the four-day event, held at the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech University, good for ninth-place.
The Top 10 finish comes in the wake of Ohio State’s highest-ever finish at the NCAA championships, seventh-place last year. Way cool, too, is the team’s 27 All-America honors this year which ranks second to the 28 honors achieved last year, and the team is experiencing all this success at NCAAs after winning the last three Big Ten Conference championships (in 2020, 2021 and 2022).
“I could not be more proud of our young ladies,” Dorenkott said. “This is the culmination of a lot of time, effort and energy over the past year. Our women made a commitment to each other earlier in the season that whatever path they forged, they would do it together. And, that is exactly what they did. They were committed to the hard work of building real relationships that lead to championship level performances.
“In particular, I would like to thank our four seniors: Kristen, Katie, Emily and Sally. The hallmark of winners is leaving things better than you found them. These young women are winners. We are blessed to call them Buckeyes.”
Two Buckeyes scored individual points Saturday: So. Maya Geringer swam to a career-best time of 15:59.82 to place ninth in the 1,650 freestyle, and So. Katherine Zenick placed 14th in the 100 freestyle in 47.85. Both swimmers earned honorable mention All-America honors.
Ohio State’s 400 freestyle team contributed 22 points to the team total. The team of Zenick, Jr. Amy Fulmer, Sr. Emily Crane and Fr. Teresa Ivan, finished ninth in a time of 3:11.44.
Also competing today: Sally Tafuto was 38th in the 1,650 free in 16:27.33. Amy Fulmer was 32nd in the 100 free (48.53) and Emily Crane set a personal best in the 100 free of 48.78 and finished 38th. Hannah Bach finished 26th in the 200 breast in 2:09.02 while Janessa Mathews (2:09.33) and Josie Panitz (2:10.27) were 33rd and 37th, respectively. Kristen Romano set a personal best in the 200 fly of 1:55.12, which placed her 19th, and Katie Trace was 40th in 1:57.05.
On platform, So. Ciara McGing, competing at her first NCAA Championships, finished 22nd with 253.95 points.
