
No. 5 Ohio State Edged at No. 6 Illinois Despite Splitting Events

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 5 Ohio State men’s gymnastics team opened the conference season with a 400.750-394.500 loss at No. 6 Illinois despite scoring a season-high on floor, rings and vault as a unit and winning those events.
Kameron Nelson recorded the first individual career-best of the meet with a 14.350 on floor. On rings, both Tyler Rockwood (13.450) and Tomohiro Kawada (13.200) scored career-highs. Nelson tallied his second career-high of the meet on the vault (14.450), joined by Justin Ah Chow’s career-high of 14.550.
How it Happened
Floor
Nelson’s 14.350 led the Buckeyes to a team-high 68.000 on floor in the opening rotation. Jesse Tyndall (13.950) and Ah Chow (13.800) both recorded individual season-highs. Dexter Roettker earned a 13.100 and Kazuki Hayashi a 12.800 to round out OSU’s showing.
Pommel Horse
Logan McGlynn made his collegiate debut on the pommel horse, coming away with an 11.500. Ah Chow led the Buckeyes with a score of 13.700, followed by pommel horse specialist Curtis Chang at 13.250. Andrew Brower scored 12.300 and Luke Smigliani earned a 12.100.
Rings
Tyndall led Ohio State on the rings with a 13.700, followed closely by Donovan Hewitt’s 13.600. Rockwood and Kawada posted career-highs at 13.450 and 13.200, respectively. Nelson wrapped up the Buckeyes’ rotation with a 12.950.
Vault
Ohio State posted a season-best 71.300 on the vault as all five gymnasts scored at least 14.000. Ah Chow and Nelson’s career-highs of 14.550 and 14.450, respectively, led the Buckeyes on the event. Hayashi scored a season-best 14.200, followed by Roettker’s 14.100 and Hewitt’s 14.000.
Parallel Bars
Jakob Murray scored a season-best 13.000 on the parallel bars. Tyndall led the team with a score of 13.450, while Hayashi also eclipsed 13 points with a 13.150. Brower earned a 12.500 and Domenic Sciulli capped off the event with an 12.400.
High Bar
The Buckeyes finished the meet on high bar, with Roettker earning a team-high 13.050. Hayashi scored a 12.850, while Hewitt earned a 12.800 and Sciulli a 12.650. Tyndall closed the meet with a 9.600.

Head Coach Rustam Sharipov: “We showed improvements on floor, rings and vault with season-highs, however it was a disappointment with the overall outcome. I feel confident in our team and our preparation and we’re looking forward to being back at home versus TUN next week.”
