COLUMBUS, Ohio – Week in and week out, Buckeye student-athletes raise the standard of excellence set at Ohio State, whether that be in competition, in the classroom, or in the community. ‘Buckeye Spotlight’ recognizes student-athletes who had noteworthy accomplishments both in contests and beyond the box score.
Throughout the 50th anniversary of Title IX, Ohio State Athletics continues to celebrate exceptional female student-athletes and women’s teams throughout history, highlighting a new moment or person every week. 2022 Academic All-Big Ten
- Congrats to the 124 Buckeyes named to the 2022 Academic All-Big Ten list
- It’s the second-most in Ohio State history for the fall season (140 in 2021)
- Eligible Ohio State teams: Field Hockey (14), Football (39), Men’s (12) and Women’s (17) Cross Country, Men’s (17) and Women’s (14) Soccer and Women’s Volleyball (11)
Zed Key | Men’s Basketball | Jr. | Bay Shore, N.Y.
- Zed is quietly having a really nice start to the season
- He leads the team in scoring (14.3 ppg), rebounding (8.7 rpg) and blocks (9)
- His 70.4 shooting percent is tops in the Big Ten and in the Top 10 nationally
- Zed has had four double-doubles in nine games this season after registering just two double-doubles over the previous two seasons
Ethan Smith | Wrestling | Sr., 174 | Latrobe, Pennsylvania
- Was a reserve vs. Kent State but moved into the lineup on short notice
- Responded with a win by technical fall, 21-6, over KSU’s Mason Karpinski
- The win pushed Ohio State’s lead to 10 (19-9) after consecutive wins by the Golden Flash cut OSU’s lead to 14-9.
- Helped the No. 3 Buckeyes improve to 4-0 on the year in dual competition
Women’s Volleyball
- The Buckeyes advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals for the first time since 2004 with a four-set win (22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-19) against second-seeded Minnesota last Thursday.
- Ohio State finished the season at 22-10 overall and tied for third in the Big Ten with a 15-5 conference record.
- OSU recorded nine ranked wins on the season and was ranked in the top-10 for the season’s entirety, setting a program record for 15-straight weeks in the top-10.
- The Buckeyes earned their first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Setter of the Year awards in addition to five all-conference honorees, the AVCA Regional Player of the Year and four all-region honorees.

Taylor Thierry | Women’s Basketball | So. | Cleveland, Ohio
- Sophomore guard/forward Taylor Thierry continued her break-out season with another impressive week to lead the Buckeyes to two wins to start the season 10-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season. Last week, Thierry averaged 17.5 points and 7.5 rebounds to lead Ohio State in both categories, also shooting a whopping 77.3 percent from the floor (17-of-22). She was named to the Big Ten weekly honor roll for the first time in her career.
- Against New Hampshire, Thierry scored 14 points (one shy of her previous career-high despite only playing 22 minutes) on 7-of-9 shooting and tied for a team-high six rebounds.
- Then against Michigan State, Thierry set a new career-high with 21 points on 10-of-13 shooting and added a season-high nine rebounds, playing 40 minutes for the first time in her career.
- This season, Thierry is averaging 11.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.0 steals per game in her first year as a starter. She is 54-of-74 (.730) from the field this season and has seven games in double figures.
