Ohio State Head Coach Chris Holtmann and players Bruce Thornton & Sean McNeil met with the media Wednesday afternoon to discuss the recent team’s performance and the upcoming against Charleston Southern.
On his evaluation of the first game:
“We had a couple of possessions that I thought were wasted possessions offensively. We didn’t move at the level we needed to and we had a couple foolish turnovers, careless turnovers, and plays that weren’t there. That’s not going to be the last time that we’re going to see this. That’s the reality of playing young kids and a new team, and that’s the reality for every team this early in the year.”
On the incoming recruiting class:
“It’s a really experimental class on paper but more importantly it’s another really good class, it’s back to back really good classes, that I think fit us, fit our program, and fit the versatility and size that we’re looking to add. So we’re really excited about Devin, Scotty, Austin and Taison.”
On recruiting a couple Ohio players and recruiting in Ohio in general:
On his playing in his first real game:
“After the first play my nerves go away usually, but this game it took me a couple possessions to get my feet under myself and feel comfortable. But, when that happened it felt like practice and everything was just flowing.”
On what his teammates told him before the first game:
“They just told me to be myself, that’s what got me here in the first place. Just doing what I have to do every single day. They (his teammates) have seen the work I put in day to day, and they know what I’m capable of doing I just have to show what I’m able to do.”
On the team mentality of working as a group than just as one man:
“The whole team can go off at any moment, we have a lot of trust in each other and don’t care who has the most points at the end of day, it just matters if we get the win or not.”
On the younger members of the team:
“Being around college basketball for a while and seeing this freshmen class they’re super talented and unlike anything I’ve seen before in a group of freshmen. Then, knowing the group they have coming in next year, the next couple years of Ohio State Basketball could be really special.”
On the difference between West Virginia’s Coach Bob Huggins and Coach Holtmann:
“There are different ways to achieving success. Hugs has his way and Holt has his way. Holt is very successful as well and is very underrated in my opinion. He goes about his business and handles his business in a mature manner. Being able to experience two different styles of coaching, both at a very high level, is something I’m very grateful for.”
