Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik to BTN postgame on keys to the win …
"[It was] our work ethic against the best team in the country. As much talent as they have, you have to play above the puck. I thought our forwards did a great job of coming back and playing above the puck and that was the difference."
How it Happened
- The only goal of the first period came off a shot by Buckeye defenseman Dominic Vidoli that was deflected by a Gopher past the goalie at 14:16. Michael Gildon, who led Vidoli into the zone, had the assist on the tally, Vidoli's first of the year.
- Minnesota's Jackson LaCombe tied the game just 90 seconds into the second, putting a slapshot from the blueline in right after a Gopher faceoff win.
- The Buckeyes scored the next two goals, converting twice in 1:12. With the Buckeyes on their first (and only) power play of the game, Travis Treloar tipped a Mason Lohrei shot to put the Buckeyes ahead at 7:48, with Jake Wise also assisting. At the nine-minute mark Joe Dunlap scored on the fly down the right wing. Matt Cassidy and James Marooney, who started the play in the defensive zone, assisted on Dunlap's goal.
- Minnesota cut Ohio State's lead to one with a goal at 13:10, but Ohio State answered 1:23 later. The Gopher goalie left the puck behind his net for the defenseman, but he caught an edge and Stephen Halliday got to the puck first, getting to the basically empty net for a 4-2 Buckeye lead at 14:33.
- Just two minutes into the third Treloar tallied again, scoring on a backhand from in front during a long Buckeye shift in the Gopher zone. Tate Singleton and Tyler Duke posted the helpers on the goal.
- The final Ohio State goal of the night was scored by Patrick Guzzo at 7:12. He and Dunlap raced in the Gopher zone and Dunlap's pass led Guzzo behind the Minnesota defender for a one-on-one vs. the goalie and he scored on a backhand.
- Minnesota tallied at 11:54 and 19:45 for the 6-4 final.
- The Buckeyes outshot the Gohers, 35-31, including 15-10 in the middle period. Ohio State blocked 19 shots, led by Scooter Brickey with four and Halliday with three.
- Ohio State goalie Jakub Dobes made 27 saves in 59:46.
- Each team had one power play chance – Ohio State was 1-for-1 on the penalty kill and the power play.
