
Introducing the 2023 Buckeye Freshmen

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As another year of fall ball comes to a close, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team has shown it’s been hard at work preparing for the upcoming season. Among those hitting the field this fall were the Buckeyes’ 12 freshmen. The freshmen class features two attackmen, three defensemen, five midfielders, a goaltender and a face-off specialist hailing from seven states.
Get to know this year’s Buckeye lacrosse freshmen class:
Jonny Cool | Defense | McDonogh School | Baltimore, Md.
- Three-sport athlete who competed in indoor track and football at the McDonogh School.
- Named an All-MIAA team member and earned First Team All State and All-Metro.
- VSN Defensive Player of the Year in 2022
- Earned Nike All-American honors in 2022
- Member of the Dean’s List from 2018-2021 at McDonogh.
- Also earned First Team All-MIAA honors in 2020 for indoor track.
- Son of Paul and Veronica Cool.
Johnny Maccarone | Attack | IMG Academy | Syosset, N.Y.
- Played a post-graduate year at IMG Academy.
- All-Conference honoree during his career at St. Anthony’s H.S.
- Served as captain during his senior season at St. Anthony’s.
- Helped his team to the 2021 Catholic School League championship.
- Played club for Igloo Lacrosse.
- Also played basketball.
- Son of John and Arlene Maccarone.
Gavin Begonia | Midfield | Lawrence Academy | Gorham, Maine
- Three-sport athlete who also played hockey and soccer at Lawrence Academy.
- Scored 31 goals and added 19 assists as a junior in the spring of 2021.
- Named to the All-ISL First Team and BostonLax All-Star team.
- Played club lacrosse for the New Hampshire Tomahawks.
- Was an honor roll student who is also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars.
- Has a sister, Celia, who is a member of the women’s lacrosse team at the University of Vermont
- Is the son of Eric and Renee Begonia.
Matt Caputo | Attack | Lutheran | Westbury, N.Y,
- A two-sport athlete who played football and lacrosse for Lutheran.
- Team captain and all-county selection on the lacrosse field.
- The NYSAIS points leader for attackmen.
- Served as team captain in football where he was an all-county choice while leading his team in interceptions.
- Was on the winning team in the World Series of Youth Lacrosse Championship in Mile High Stadium in Denver in October of 2017.
- Has a brother, Brendan, who was an All-American lacrosse player at Brown and played in the Final Four.
- Is the son of George and Mary Jean Caputo.
Tate Jones | Midfield | Middle Creek | Apex, N.C.
- A football and lacrosse standout at Middle Creek High School in North Carolina.
- First team All-State, all-region and all-conference in 2021 as a junior.
- Led the SWAC in scoring.
- A first-team All-Conference selection in the other full season that he played as a freshman in 2019.
- As a running back this past fall, became just the fourth 1,000-yard rusher in school history while adding 16 touchdowns.
- Played club lacrosse for the Annapolis Hawks and was a member of the tournament champions at the Elite Eight, NAPTOWN and Lake Placid Tournaments.
- Is the son of Ron and Leigh Anne Jones
Coleman Kraske | Faceoff | Wakefield | Wake Forest, N.C.
- The Face-off Factory ’22 national champion (No. 1-ranked).
- Two-time conference Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player.
- Named the 2022 North Carolina Lacrosse Player of the Year.
- Earned First Team All-Conference honors all four years.
- A US Lacrosse All-American
- Won 93 percent of his face-offs during the 2021 season and was an Inside Lacrosse All-Star.
- A four-year varsity starter who has led Wakefield in ground balls every season.
- Set the school record for face-offs won as a freshman.
- Played running back on the Wakefield football team.
- Wakefield’s History Student of the Year in 2022 and was an honors student.
- Is the son of Kevin and Elizabeth Kraske.
Blake Eiland | Midfield | Western Reserve Academy | Delaware, Ohio
- A two-sport athlete at Western Reserve, taking the field in both football and lacrosse.
- Two-time USA Lacrosse High School All-American.
- Named First Team All-MSLA in 2021 and 2022.
- First Team All-OCC honoree in both football and lacrosse.
- Also earned First Team All-Region honors.
- Captain for the Western Reserve lacrosse team for his senior season.
- Played club for Resolute.
- Son of Jason and Kristie Eiland.
Cullen Brown | Defense | The Landon School | Silver Spring, Md.
- A two-sport athlete who played lacrosse and basketball.
- An All-IAC First Team and All- Met Second Team selection.
- The Nike National All-Star Games Most Valuable Player as a junior.
- Played club lacrosse for DC Express and was part of the Pinnacle Lacrosse Tournament champions and Great 8 Tournament summer champions.
- Played on ESPN as part of the NAPTOWN final during the summer of 2021.
- His father, Roger, played in the NFL for the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and New England Patriots. He won a Super Bowl with the Giants in 1990.
- His sister, Parker, plays lacrosse at Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y.
- A four-year member of the Honor Roll at The Landon School.
- Is the son of Roger Brown and Courtney Sullivan.
Dillon Magee | Midfield | Lovejoy | Allen, Texas
- Played lacrosse, basketball and football for Lovejoy High School.
- Two-year captain of the lacrosse team and senior captain of the football team.
- Member of the Leopard’s 2022 state championship finalist lacrosse team.
- Defensive District MVP in 2021 and First Team All-State honoree.
- Named an All-District selection his freshman year.
- Played club for Long Island Express and helped the team to a NLF championship in 2019.
- Son of Michael and Ellyn Magee.
- Father, Michael, played lacrosse at Syracuse and was a member of the 1989 championship team.
Sam Burns | Midfield | Upper Arlington | Upper Arlington, Ohio
- Played lacrosse and ice hockey at Upper Arlington High School in Columbus.
- Named the 2022 Ohio Player of the Year, OCC Player of the Year and Regional Midfield Player of the Year.
- Was the team’s leading goal-scorer and an all-Ohio selection as a junior in 2021.
- Also an all-conference and all-region selection.
- Part of a team that won the Midwest championship.
- Earned all-state and all-conference honors in hockey.
- Has an uncle, Jeff, who played football at Toledo.
- Is the son of Chris and Shelly Burns.
Griffin Liedel | Defense | Hudson | Hudson, Ohio
- Named the 2022 Adam S. Hamilton Award Northern Ohio Player of the Year in 2021 and 2022.
- A two-time US Lacrosse All-American and First Team All-State honoree.
- First team All-Ohio and All-Region award winner.
- Was Hudson’s Defensive MVP as a freshman in 2019.
- A USA Select U18 selection, National All-Star Game choice and member of the Inside Lacrosse Session I & II All-Tournament Team in 2021.
- Member of the National Honor Society and active in service learning, where he’s currently placed in a kindergarten class.
- Is the son of Jeff and Joanna Liedel.
Oran Gelinas | Goalie | Middlesex School | Waltham, Mass.
- A Boston Lax All-America selection.
- Selected as a team captain for his senior season in 2022.
- Recorded a school-record 254 saves and 13.SPG during his senior season, good for first in the Independent School League in both categories.
- DCL All-Star selection as a freshman in 2019.
- Made a career-high 30 saves in a game as a freshman in 2019.
- Played club lacrosse for Laxachusetts.
- Named an AP Scholar with honors at the Middlesex School.
- Is the son of Chris and Melissa Gelinas.
