No. 16 Buckeyes Top Bentley, 9-2

COLUMBUS, Ohio – With points from 15 players, including multiple points from seven, the No. 16 Ohio State men's hockey team defeated Bentley, 9-2, in a nonconference game Thursday evening in Value City Arena. Kamil Sadlocha and Jake Wise both scored twice for Ohio State to lead the way. The Buckeyes were ahead 2-0 after the first period and pushed the lead to 5-0 midway through the second. Bentley got on the board in the second but the Buckeyes responded for a 6-1 advantage through 40 minutes. Ohio State outscored the Falcons 3-1 in the third for the 9-2 final.
Ohio State is now 5-1-1 on the year. The Buckeyes and Bentley (1-3) will close the series at 7 p.m. Friday in Value City Arena, with the game streamed through Big Ten Plus. The Short Story
The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period. Jaedon Leslie opened the scoring at 12:16 and Kamil Sadlocha tallied shorthanded with one second left on a penalty at 16:56.
Ohio State scored three times in the first half of the second period – with Joe Dunlap, Jake Wise (on the power play) and Matt Cassidy tallying – for a 5-0 lead at 9:38. The Falcons got on the board with a shorthanded goal of their own, but Ohio State answered less than two minutes later with a power play goal by Cam Thiesing and the Buckeyes carried a 6-1 lead into the second intermission.
In the third, Wise notched his second of the game just 46 seconds in. The teams scored three times in the final 4:05 for the 9-2 final. Bentley tallied at 15:55, followed by goals for Ohio State from Davis Burnside and Sadlocha.
Sadlocha led the Buckeyes with four points on two goals and two assists, while Wise had three points with two goals and a helper. Freshman Stephen Halliday had his second three-assist and point game of the season. Thiesing and Cassidy each had two points with a goal and a helper and Scooter Brickey and Evan McIntyre had two assists apiece. In all, 15 Buckeye skaters had at least one point.
The Buckeyes outshot Bentley, 41-29. Jakub Dobes started in the Buckeye net and played 54:07, making 24 saves on 25 shots. Reilly Herbst entered for the final 5:40 and had three saves in his first collegiate appearance. Ohio State blocked 13 Falcon shot attempts, led by James Marooney with three and McIntyre with two.
Ohio State was 2-for-5 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill vs. Bentley.
Buckeye This and That
- Sadlocha's four points were a career best after three two-point outings. It was his second two-goal game as a Buckeye and first since Nov. 5, 2021 vs. Penn State. It was his first career two-assist game.
- Wise matched his career best with three points, first set Jan. 29, 2022 at Penn State. It was his second collegiate two-goal game, with the first in that outing vs. the Nittany Lions.
- Halliday had three assists for the second time, after a three-assist game vs. Wisconsin Oct. 8. He is first on the team with seven assists and eight points.
- Wise and Sadlocha lead the Buckeyes with four goals each.
- Thiesing had his seventh career two-point game.
- Cassidy had his second two-point game in the Scarlet and Gray and first since Jan. 1, 2022 vs. LIU. The goal was his second as a Buckeye, with the first Dec. 18, 2020 vs. Arizona State.
- McIntyre had the first multiple point game of his career with two assists.
- Brickey had his second two-assist game in the Scarlet and Gray.
- The nine goals were the most for the Buckeyes since a 9-1 win over Wisconsin March 6 in game one of a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal series.
- Ohio State had 40-plus shots for the fifth time in seven games.
- The Buckeyes are 23-for-24 (.958) on the penalty kill this season. The squad is 7-for-33 (.212) on the power play.
