COLUMBUS, Ohio – Incoming Buckeye Sofie Lundin will play at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics for Sweden, the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation announced on Jan. 19. Lundin signed a National Letter of Intent with the Buckeyes in November and will join the team next season.
“We are so proud of Sofie for making Sweden’s Olympic team,” Ohio State head coach Nadine Muzerall said. “I have been watching her grow for the last five years into such a mature player with so much natural talent. She has played with some of the best players not only in Sweden, but in the world, and will represent her country well as this has been a lifelong dream of hers.”
Lundin helped the Swedes qualify for the 2022 Olympics, and their first top-level event in three years, in November. She played in all three of Sweden’s games of the qualification tournament and scored one goal. Overall, she finished the tournament with a +6 on ice rating, good for second best among all skaters.
The native of Helsingborg, Sweden has played the last six seasons for Djurgarden Stockholm. Though this year is her first Olympics at the senior level, she was a member of Sweden’s 2016 Youth Olympic Games gold medal team. She has also skated for her country in the 2019 IIHF Women’s World Championships and the 2017 and 2018 U18 Women’s Worlds.
Sweden meets Japan in its opening game of the Olympics. The team will play in Group B, facing the Czech Republic, China and Denmark in addition to the Japanese in the preliminary rounds beginning Feb. 3.
