Team Canada, with Two Buckeyes, Finishes Fifth at Olympics

Team Canada, featuring Ohio State fencing alums Alanna Goldie and Eleanor Harvey, placed fifth in the women’s foil team competition at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Canada, the No. 6 seed, fell to eventual silver medalist and No. 3 seed France in the opening round, 45-29. The squad then rebounded with back-to-back wins to claim fifth, topping Hungary, 45-33, and Japan, 45-31.
Each team match consists of nine bouts, as each of the three fencers on one team faces each of the three fencers on the other team once. The first team to reach 45 points is declared the winner. Each of the nine bouts lasts a maximum of three minutes.
Goldie made her Olympic debut in the match vs. France. Harvey, in her second Olympic games, competed earlier in the week in women’s individual foil, posting a first round win and ending in 16th place.
Fencing has concluded at the Tokyo Games. In addition to Goldie and Harvey, Ohio State alum Marc-Antoine Blais Belanger (Canada) and rising junior Diego Cervantes (Mexico) also competed at the Games. Blais-Belanger finished 34th in men’s individual epee and Cervantes was 32nd in men’s individual foil. Both men were making their Olympic debut.
