Record 26 Buckeyes are 2020 Tokyo Olympians

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State University Department of Athletics will feature a record representation of student-athletes at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in July with 26 current, former or incoming student-athletes set to compete for their respective country’s Olympic Team.

The United States Olympic Team will have the most Ohio State Buckeyes: nine. The U.S. contingent features five current Ohio State student-athletes – track and field performers Adelaide Aquilla and Anavia Battle, swimmer Hunter Armstrong and pistol shooters Henry and Jackson Leverett. Also on team USA are alums Christina Clemons, née Manning, a hurdler, defending gold medalist wrestler Kyle Snyder and gymnast Alec Yoder, and incoming freshman synchronized swimmer Ruby Remati.
Nine current Buckeyes will compete in Tokyo. In addition to Armstrong, Aquilla, Battle and the Leverett brothers, current Buckeyes competing at this Olympic Games include fencer Diego Cervantes (Mexico), sprinter Eric Harrison (Trinidad & Tobago), swimmer Ruslan Gaziev (Canada) and rower Alessandra Montesano (Italy).
The remaining United States Olympic trials came to a close yesterday. Some countries’ trials are still ongoing, but will be completed by June 30 at the very latest.
The 2020 Tokyo Olympics
The Olympic Games are officially branded as the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, even though they are taking place in 2021 because of last year’s postponement. The Tokyo Olympics begin Friday, July 23, with the opening ceremony at Tokyo’s Olympic Stadium. The opening ceremony will take place at 8 p.m. local time in Japan, which is 7 a.m. EDT in the United States.
