Buckeyes on to NCAA Second Round with Shutout of UIC

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 15 seed Ohio State women's tennis team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship, as it downed UIC, 4-0, Friday at the Auer Tennis Complex in Columbus. The Buckeyes, now 22-3 on the year, will face Vanderbilt, which defeated Ball State 4-0 in the first round Friday, at noon Saturday for a spot in the Round of 16. Tournament Central
The Buckeyes won the doubles point and three straight-set singles matches vs. the Flames (19-6). Lucia Marzal and Irina Cantos Siemers won in both singles and doubles, with freshman Madeline Atway's singles victory clinching the team win. Lisa Hofbauer and Luna Dormet also won in doubles.
Noting the Win and the Matchup with Vanderbilt
- The Buckeyes improved to 5-0 all-time in NCAA matches in Columbus. The squad also hosted in 2016 and '17.
- Ohio State is making its seventh straight NCAA appearance and the 17th in program history.
- Against Vanderbilt, the Buckeyes are 4-1 all-time. The teams met in Nashville in 2020, a 5-2 Commodore victory. The teams faced off twice in 2016, with Ohio State winning 4-3 at ITA National Indoors and 4-2 at home, and the Buckeyes posted a 5-2 road victory in 2017. The first matchup between the teams was a 9-0 Ohio State win in 1976.
- The Buckeyes played at Vanderbilt in their previous two NCAA Tournament trips (2018, 2019), as well as in 2015, but suffered first-round losses and did not take on the home team.
- The Buckeyes enter round two of the NCAA tourney on a 14-match winning streak.
In Doubles
- The Buckeyes won the doubles point for the 20th match in a row, with courts two and three notching victories against UIC.
- On court three, Ohio State's Luna Dormet and Irina Cantos Siemers, ranked 80th, posted a 6-2 win over Nell Arendt and Marina Hermanny. Dormet and Cantos Siemers are 13-0 in dual matches this spring.
- The tandem of Lucia Marzal and Lisa Hofbauer followed with a 6-3 win on court two against Lucie Prochazkova and Ana Jover. The Buckeye duo has a 13-2 record this year.
- 50-ranked Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen led Tamara Malazonia and Agnes Gustafsson 5-2 when their match was abandoned.
In Singles
- Marzal put the Buckeyes ahead 2-0, as she topped Jover on court four, 6-2, 6-3. The redshirt sophomore leads the Buckeyes were a 23-3 record overall and a 21-2 mark in dual matches. She is on a seven-match winning streak.
- 18-ranked Cantos Siemers followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory against Malazonia on court one. The All-Big Ten choice has a 19-5 overall record this year and is 16-5 in dual play.
- Freshman Madeline Atway clinched the team victory, defeated Arendt on court six. Atway broke and held for a 7-5 first set victory and did not drop a game in the second set.
- Lisa Hofbauer was a game away from winning her match against Prochazkova on court three, leading 6-4, 5-2 when play was stopped.
- On court five Dormet led Georgia Gulin, 6-4, 3-1.
- The match on court two between Boulais and Gustafsson was early in the third set when the match was abandoned. Gustafsson led 1-6, 6-3, 1-0.
