B1G Champs! No. 10 Ohio State Defeats PSU to Clinch Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 10 Ohio State women's tennis team topped Penn State, 6-0, Saturday at the Auer Tennis Complex, clinching at least a share of the 2021 Big Ten Championship. Ohio State finishes conference play 15-1 and is 18-3 overall.
Ohio State won the doubles point and posted five singles wins, all in straight sets, for the victory over the Nittany Lions (10-7, 9-7 B1G). Kolie Allen, Lisa Hofbauer and Lucia Marzal all won in singles and doubles and Irina Cantos Siemers and Luna Dormet posted singles wins, while Isabelle Boulais paired with Allen for a doubles victory.

- The Big Ten title is the third for the Buckeyes, who won back-to-back in 2016 and '17.
- Ohio State won the Big Ten regular season title in 2000 with a 9-1 regular season record; at that time, the tournament winner was considered the Big Ten champion. Since 2009, the regular season winner is declared the Big Ten champion.
- The Buckeyes won six unofficial Big Ten championships from 1974-79 when women's tennis was not a sport sponsored by the Big Ten.

Ohio State will be the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, set for April 28-May 2 in Madison, Wis. Michigan is 14-1 and can clinch a share of the regular season title with a victory over Michigan State Sunday. In the event of a tie, the team with the highest ITA ranking on the day after the last regular season match will be seeded ahead of the team with the same record. Ohio State is No. 10 in the ITA computer rankings, with Michigan No. 20.
In Doubles
- The Buckeyes won the doubles point in all 16 Big Ten regular season matches.
- Against the Nittany Lions, Ohio State posted 6-2 wins on courts 1 and 2 for the 1-0 lead.
- On court two, Buckeyes Lisa Hofbauer and Lucia Marzal topped Sofiya Chekhlystova and Alexandra Nielsen. The Ohio State tandem is 9-2 overall and in B1G matches.
- The Buckeyes' No. 62-ranked team of Isabelle Boulais and Kolie Allen defeated Gabby O'Gorman and Karly Friedland on court one to clinch the doubles point. The Buckeye duo was 10-1 in B1G regular season play and is 13-2 overall and in dual matches.
- On court three the Ohio State duo of Irina Cantos Siemers and Luna Dormet led Olivia Ryan and Samantha Smith 4-3 when play was suspended.
In Singles
- Marzal dropped just one game on court five for a 2-0 Ohio State lead. The Buckeye defeated Nielsen, 6-1, 6-0. The sophomore is a team-best 19-3 overall and 17-2 in dual matches this spring. She ended B1G play 14-1 in conference outings.
- Dormet followed with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lebedeva on court six for a 3-0 Ohio State advantage. She is 17-1 overall this year and 15-1 in dual matches, with a 12-1 B1G mark.
- Three Buckeyes were close to clinching at the same time.
- Allen posted the Buckeyes' fourth point to seal the Big Ten title, as she beat Smith on court three, 6-2, 6-3. Allen was 10-4 in B1G play this spring.
- On court four Hofbauer was a 6-2, 6-3 winner against Friedland. She finished B1G regular season action 9-4 and is 12-6 in dual play.
- 12-ranked Cantos Siemers posted the sixth Buckeye point. After coming from behind to win the first set 7-5 the Buckeye took the second, 6-1. She had a 12-3 mark in Big Ten outings and is 15-4 in dual matches, with an 18-4 overall record.
- The match on court two between Boulais and Chekhlystova was abandoned with the Nittany Lion ahead, 7-5, 4-4.
