Ohio State Drops 4-3 Overtime Decision to No. 5 Northwestern
3/26/2021 7:13:00 PM | Field Hockey
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Playing its sixth consecutive game against a top-12 opponent, the Ohio State field hockey team did on Friday what it's done all year: fight and claw to the end. Today's result was a heartbreaking 4-3 overtime setback at No. 5 Northwestern (7-2) that wasn't decided until Ana Medina Garcia scored nine and a half minutes into the extra session.
Sophomore Mackenzie Allessie scored two goals, including the tying score with under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, and Nikki Trzaska added the other. Ohio State (0-6) fought back from a 3-1 second-quarter deficit and will get a chance to earn a split of the two-game weekend series on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. ET.
Northwestern's Bente Baekers scored just 1:17 into the first quarter to give Northwestern a quick 1-0 lead, but three minutes later Allessie converted the equalizer when she capitalized on a penalty corner off assists from Emma Goldean and Sina Schwinn.
The score remained tied at 1-all for just 1:20 as Baekers scored unassisted to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead. They'd extend it to 3-1 with just 49 seconds remaining in the first period, but then wouldn't find the back of the cage again until overtime.
Trzaska's unassisted goal – her second of the season – at 16:10 of the second quarter made the score 3-2 and then after a scoreless third period, the Buckeyes found the equalizer when Allessie made good on yet another penalty corner.
Ohio State outshot Northwestern on the day 18-14 and had a 9-2 edge in penalty corners. For the season, Ohio State has earned 35 corners to just 15 for its opponents. The 18 shots were also a season high.
Freshman goalie Abby Danson made a career high seven saves.
