COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 5 Northwestern scored on a penalty corner in the second overtime to complete a two-goal comeback and knock off Ohio State, 3-2, on Sunday in Evanston. The Buckeyes, who were playing their seventh consecutive game against a top-12 ranked team, are 0-7 on the year while Northwestern improves to 8-2.

The Buckeyes, who scored a season-high three goals on Friday in a 4-3 overtime setback, struck early on Sunday. Sarah Charley found the back of the cage for the first time in 2021, scoring off a pass from Tess Maloney to give the Scarlet and Gray a quick 1-0 lead.

Late in the second quarter, the Buckeyes converted on their third penalty corner of the afternoon as Leanne Bough scored off assists from Delaney Lawler and Emma Goldean to put Ohio State in front 2-0. It was also Bough's first goal of the season.

Ohio State held its 2-0 lead until late in the fourth quarter. With 5:03 remaining in regulation, Lauren Wadas scored unassisted off a goalie deflection to cut the Buckeye lead in half, 2-1. With just 26 seconds remaining in the fourth, Northwestern scored on a penalty corner to tie the game, sending it to overtime for the second time this weekend.

After neither team scored in the first extra session, Northwestern made good on its sixth and final penalty corner of the game, scoring a goal off the stick of Wadas.

The Wildcats ended up outshooting Ohio State 15-9 with 10 of those shots coming in the fourth quarter and two overtime periods. The Buckeyes and a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners and both goalies made three saves.

Ohio State is back at home next weekend, April 2 and April 4, when it hosts Indiana at Buckeye Varsity Field.
