Buckeyes Defeat North Carolina and Duke on Day One of OSU Invitational

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Both the Ohio State men's and women's fencing teams were 2-1 on the first day of the OSU Invitational in French Field House. The squads defeated North Carolina and Duke and fell to Notre Dame.
The Buckeyes will return to FFH Sunday for day two of the invitational. Ohio State is slated to face Air Force Academy at 8 a.m., NJIT at 9:30 and Temple's women's squad at 11 a.m. In the afternoon the Buckeyes will take on North Carolina at 1:30 p.m., Penn State at 3 p.m. and the Denison women's team at 4:30 p.m. A full schedule for Sunday is online HERE. Leaders
For the Buckeye women, Alexanne Verret (epee) and Julieta Toledo (sabre) led the way with 7-2 records on the day. Montserrat Viveros was 6-3 in epee, while Camilla Rivano and Grace Seal were both 5-4 in foil.
On the men's side, Diego Cervantes (foil) had a team-best 8-1 record. Henry Lange was second with six wins in epee (6-3) and Kaiden Crotchett picked up five wins in epee, with freshman Edriss Ndiaye going 5-2 in foil.
Buckeyes vs. Tar Heels
To open the day, the Buckeye men topped the Tar Heels 15-12 and the women were 16-11 winners.
For the men, the foil squad was a team-best 7-2, as Cervantes was 3-0 and Nathan Wriedt and Ndiaye each had two wins. Sabre and epee both dropped 5-4 decisions. Lange was first with two wins in epee and in sabre freshman Jack Price led the way with two victories.
On the women's side, the sabre squad won 6-3, with Evie Bustamante, Toledo and Steph Miller each posting two wins. Foil and epee both clinched 5-4 wins over the Tar Heels. Rivano was a perfect 3-0 in foil, with Seal 2-1 in her first collegiate foil competition. In epee, Verret was 3-0 and Viveros was 2-1.
Buckeyes vs. Fighting Irish
Notre Dame prevailed over the Buckeye women, 16-11, and the men, 20-7.
The men's epee squad posted a 5-4 win against the Fighting Irish, as Crotchett was 3-0 to lead the Buckeyes. Sabre and foil both lost 6-3. Cervantes was first with two foil wins and freshman Nolan Williams had two wins to rank first for the sabre squad.
The women's sabre squad topped Notre Dame, 5-4, with Toledo posting a 3-0 mark. Freshman Zoë Shay-Tannas notched her first collegiate win vs the Irish. Notre Dame won 7-2 in epee and 9-0 in foil.
Buckeyes vs. Blue Devils
Ohio State swept Duke with a 14-12 women's victory and 14-13 men's win.
Against the Blue Devils, the Buckeye foil squad won 5-4 and epee was ahead 6-2. Duke claimed sabre, 6-3. In epee, both Verret and Viveros were 3-0. Seal was 3-0 vs. the Blue Devils in foil, while Rivano was 2-1. Toledo had two wins against Duke in sabre.
The men were guided by a 7-2 foil victory and 6-3 win in epee. Duke claimed sabre, 8-1. Cervantes was again 3-0 in foil, matched by Ndiaye. Lange posted three wins in epee, while Bence Bende was 2-1.
New Buckeyes
Six Buckeye freshmen saw their first collegiate action during day one of the OSU Invitational: Edriss Ndiaye, David Ouellette, Jack Price, Grace Seal Zoë Shay-Tannas and Nolan Williams.
