
Buckeyes Sweep Iowa to Improve to 6-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s volleyball team stayed unbeaten under the direction of first-year head coach Jen Flynn Oldenburg, sweeping Iowa (28-26, 29-27, 25-18) Saturday at the Covelli Center. The win improved the Buckeyes’ record to 6-0 overall and in the Big Ten Conference while the Hawkeyes drop to 1-7 overall and in the Big Ten.
Ohio State’s 6-0 record is the best in eight years, or since the 2013 team opened with a 13-0 mark.
The Buckeyes hit .301 for the match while holding the Hawkeyes to a .282 clip.
Individually, Vanja Bukilic and Emily Londot led the Buckeyes with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Lauren Witte put away nine of her 12 error-free kill attempts for a team-best .750 hitting percentage. Mac Podraza distributed 41 assists and dug 11 balls while Kylie Murr contributed eight digs and Hannah Gruensfelder had seven.
Set 1: The Hawkeyes jumped out to a 7-3 lead before the Buckeyes fought back to a 15-all tie. After taking a timeout, Iowa kept the lead up to 23-21, at which point there were ties at 23-all, 25-all and 26-all before the Buckeyes scored the final two points of the set for a 28-26 winner.
Set 2: Ohio State led early but Iowa found its way back to tie the score at 8-8. Another run pushed the Buckeyes out to a 12-8 lead but the Hawkeyes kept battling and forced extra play once again before dropping a 29-27 set.
Set 3: The Buckeyes never trailed and were dominant behind an 18-10 kill advantage in taking the third and final set, 25-18.
Next up for the Buckeyes, who are 4-0 in the Covelli Center this season, is a single date match with Penn State on Feb. 17.
