COLUMBUS, Ohio – Led by four-point performances from Jenna Buglioni, Jenn Gardiner and Sophie Jaques, the No. 2 Ohio State women’s hockey team defeated St. Thomas, 8-1, on Friday night at the St. Thomas Ice Arena. In all, twelve players recorded a point for Ohio State (9-2-0, 9-2-0 WCHA) in the game one win over the Tommies (4-6-1, 2-6-1 WCHA).
How it Happened
The Buckeyes dominated the first period of play from Mendota Heights, Minn., taking 26 shots on St. Thomas and not allowing a single shot by the Tommies. Clair DeGeorge recorded Ohio State’s first goal of the game with 0:37 left in the first period. The Buckeyes recovered the puck at the blue line and Paetyn Levis dished it to DeGeorge for the score.
Ohio State notched three goals in the second period, starting with Kenzie Hauswirth scoring her first of the season at 4:42 into the period. Lexi Templeman followed two minutes later with one of her own to push the Buckeyes to a 3-0 lead. With 3:18 to play in the period, the Tommie’s managed to get one past the Buckeyes, but Ohio State was not done yet. Jenna Buglioni scored her first goal of the game in the final 30 seconds of the period to restore the team’s momentum headed into the final 20 minutes of action.
Ohio State continued its pressure on the Tommies into the final period, scoring four goals over a span of 13 minutes. Liz Schepers added her second of the season, slipping one between the legs of the St. Thomas goaltender to push the Buckeyes ahead by four goals. At 8:39, Gabby Rosenthal scored her eighth goal in seven games as she received a pass from Buglioni right in front of the St. Thomas cage to give Ohio State a 6-1 lead. Jamie Grinder got in on the action as she collected another assist from Buglioni and knocked the puck behind the Tommies’ Eryn Cooley at 16:18 in the period for her first career goal. Finally, Buglioni completed her four-point performance by scoring the team’s eighth goal with 1:06 to play in the contest.
Amanda Thiele earned the start for the Buckeyes in game one against St. Thomas. The sophomore made eight saves on the night and finished with a .889 save percentage.
Game Notes
- Kenzie Hauswirth and Jamie Grinder scored their first goals of the season in game one against St. Thomas, recording the second and seventh goals of the game, respectively. Hauswirth’s goal is her first in the Scarlet and Gray sweater and ninth for her career. Grinder netted her first goal of her collegiate career.
- Both Jenn Gardiner and Sophie Jaques recorded all their points against St. Thomas on assists for the Buckeyes. The four assists set a career single-game high assist mark for both players and a single-game point record for Jaques. Jaques also finished a career and team-high +6 on ice for the Buckeyes.
- With four points on two goals and two assists, Jenna Buglioni extends her point streak to 11 games. She is tied with Hokey Langan for the sixth-longest point streak in Buckeye history. The sophomore has recorded at least one point in each of the team’s games this season and multiple points in five games.
- In her fourth career start and sixth game between the pipes for Ohio State, Amanda Thiele recorded her first point of her career. She earned the second assist on Lexi Templeman’s second period goal after putting a long pass by the Buckeyes back into play, setting Jaques up for a deep pass across the neutral zone to Templeman.
- Jennifer Gardiner and Buglioni connected with each other on two Buckeye goals Friday evening. The Canadian duo, plus Gabby Rosenthal to round of the first line of forwards for Ohio State, combined for a 10-point night.
- Finishing with eight goals, Ohio State has recorded five-plus goals in five games this season. The team has held opponents to one or less goals in seven of its 11 games this season.
