COLUMBUS, Ohio – Despite a first-quarter goal from freshman Cameryn Forgash, the 16th-ranked Ohio State field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback on Friday afternoon at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus. The loss dropped Ohio State’s record to 6-5 (1-2 in the Big Ten) while Indiana is now 7-6, 1-4.
The Short Story
Ohio State got on the board quickly, taking a 1-0 lead on Forgash’s third tally of the season just four minutes into the second quarter. The Hoosiers, however, responded with a tying goal eight minutes later and then scored once in the third and fourth quarters, respectively, to pull away.
How the Goals Were Scored
- Forgash’s early goal was set up thanks to a heady play to be in the right place at the right time. She collected a rebound off the pads of IU goalkeeper Arabella Loveridge and stuck the ball in the back of the cage.
- Indiana’s first-quarter equalizer came off a penalty corner and was credited to Kira Curland with assists by Yip van Wonderen and Sofia Arrebola Garcia.
- The score remained tied into the second half before the Hoosiers took the lead for good on a van Wonderen unassisted tally that came via a backhanded shot from in close. She finished the game with a goal and an assist.
- Maggie Carter gave Indiana all the insurance it would need with a goal in the 58th minute after Ohio State had pulled goalkeeper Aaliyah Hernandez.
This and That
- Ohio State had two second-half goals disallowed following either video review for referee consultation.
- The loss on Friday snaps a six-game winning streak against Indiana that included a pair of wins last season during a Big Ten-only spring schedule.
- Nineteen different players saw the field for Ohio State on Friday including six freshmen.
- Forgash is now tied for second on the team in both goals (three) and points (seven).
- Junior Leanne Bough lead all players with four total shots.
- The Buckeyes matched their season high with nine penalty corners. They also had nine against Ball State (Aug. 27) and Virginia (Sept. 19).
