COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State (6-9-1, 2-6-0) fell to host Rutgers (9-5-2, 3-4-1) 4-0 Sunday at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, New Jersey.
The Buckeyes had a couple second half shots turned away by the crossbar and left post of the Rutgers goal by Tomasso Villa and Thomas Gilej, respectfully, that could have changed the outcome.
The loss ended the 2021 fall season for the Buckeyes.
How it Happened
The Scarlet Knights scored first in the 35th minute on a rebound goal by Ola Mealand. Ohio State keeper Noah Lawrence made back-to-back point-blank saves but the second rebound found the back middle of the net.
Rutgers scored again in the 48th minute when Jackson Temple broke clear of the Ohio State defense and beat Lawrence with a right-footed shot that found the back left corner of the net.
The Scarlet Knights scored twice more in the second half to secure the 4-0 win.
- After each team recorded a pair of first half shots, Rutgers went on a 6-1 run in shots and a 4-0 run on shots on goal.
- For the game, Ohio State led in shots, 16-13 while the Scarlet Knights led 8-4 with shots on net.
- Thomas Gilej and Tomasso Villa tied for the team lead with four shots, each.
- Noah Lawrence made his seventh start in goal for the Buckeyes this season. He responded with four saves.
Notes
- The Buckeyes are 6-3-0 all-time vs. Rutgers, including a 2-2-0 record in Piscataway.
- Seven seniors ended careers with the loss: Noah Lawrence, Samuel Buzzas, Joe Ortiz, Luke Kiley, Luis Hernandez, Tommy Marusic and Sam Mason.
- The game at Rutgers was played under partly cloudy skies with a chance of showers and temperatures in the low-60s.
