COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s lacrosse team finished a winning opening weekend on Sunday at the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, topping Robert Morris 13-8 to improve to 2-0 on the season.
THE SHORT STORY
The Buckeyes got two goals from six different players and never looked back after taking the lead for good midway through the first half. Ali Beekhuizen, Clare Johnson, Liza Hernandez, Nicole Ferrara, Chloe Johnson and Janie Cowley were the multi-goal scorers while Jill Rizzo made eight saves in the cage. Ohio State outshot Robert Morris 35-19, held a 15-8 edge in draw controls and forced 17 Robert Morris turnovers.
QUOTEABLE
“Robert Morris is an aggressive team and we definitely lost our discipline a little bit in our play,” said head coach Amy Bokker. “We needed to execute our plays and worry about what we’re doing. I think if we stick to executing what we’ve been practicing we’ll be better overall.”
“I think at the beginning we came out a little slow but we really brought it in and figured out what needed to change,” said Hernandez. “Scoring a few goals in a row, we felt the momentum go up so we continued to push it and pile on the goals.”
HOW THE GOALS WERE SCORED
- Robert Morris came out quick in the first half, scoring twice in the opening eight minutes of the game to take a 2-0 lead. Ohio State would respond, however, with four straight to take the lead for good at the 12:43 mark of the first half.
- The Buckeye run was started by Sophie Baez and continued by Johnston, Hernandez and Janie Crowley, who all scored within seven minutes of each other.
- Robert Morris would tie the game at 4-4 with under 10 minutes to play before halftime, but Beekhuizen’s first goal of the game put Ohio State ahead for good, 5-4. Twelve seconds later, Johnston scored for the second time and the Buckeyes had a two-goal lead at halftime.
- Ohio State scored five of the first six goals of the second half to open up its largest lead, 11-5, with 15:47 to play. RMU put together back-to-back scores at 13:57 and 12:20 to cut the deficit to four, but that’s as close as they got.
- Four of Ohio State’s seven second-half goals were scored on free position shots.
