Athletics Good Stuff
- The men’s tennis team defeated No. 1 Texas, 4-1, Saturday before a packed crowd at the Varsity Tennis Center. Ohio State won the doubles point and then got singles wins from Kyle Seelig, James Trotterand Robert Cash to secure its 88th consecutive home court victory.
- In a match that featured joy, frustration, despair and finally the thrill of victory, coach Melissa Schaub’s No. 12-ranked women’s tennis team defeated No. 5 Duke, 4-2, for its second win of the year over a Top 10 team (Oklahoma). Sr. Danielle Wolf won a third-set tiebreaker, 7-5, to clinch the win for the 3-0 Buckeyes. Shiori Fukuda and Kathleen Jones also secured singles wins.
- The men’s volleyball Buckeyes went next door to Pennsylvania and picked up a 3-0 win over St. Francis and a huge, 3-0, win over No. 7 Penn State. Pennsylvania native Reese Devilbiss was fantastic with 27 kills on the weekend including 15 vs. Penn State. The Buckeyes are 8-1.
- All eyes in the track and field world were on Texas and the loaded Texas Tech Invite this weekend. Ohio State’s women and men combined for 11 top-eight performances with two of particular importance:Anavia Battle won the 200-meter dash with the fastest time in the nation at :22.86; and Alexus Pyles broke her own school record in the pentathlon with 4,040 points. Also: Fr. Shaun Miller Jr. was second in the high jump with a personal best leap of 2.09 meters and RJ Russell took third in the 600 in 1:18.58.
- Kaleb Wesson led four players in double figures with 15 points, plus had a game-high 11 rebounds, to help Ohio State to an important, 68-59, win Saturday over Indiana before a sold-out Value City Arena crowd of 18,809 fans. Eleven points by Justin Ahrens in 13 minutes off the bench were huge!
- The fencing team capped its dual meet season by posting a 16-5 record at the Northwestern Invitational. The No. 3-ranked men were 8-2 overall while the No. 4-ranked women were 8-3. Ohio State hosts the Midwest Conference Championships in French Field House Feb. 22-23.
- The wrestling team is now 9-3 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten duals after a 1-1 weekend that included a decisive, 43-3, win over the Maryland Terrapins Friday at Covelli. The Buckeyes recorded 53 takedowns in the match to one for the Terrapins.
- Men’s hockey split on the road with Michigan, winning 4-1 on Saturday with freshman Jaedon Leslie’s first career goal the game winner. Michigan native Quinn Preston had a goal and an assist. The No. 11 Buckeyes are 16-9-3 overall and 9-7-2 in Big Ten play.
- Women’s hockey, No. 5 in the nation, went 1-0-1 on the weekend vs. Bemidji State. Gabby Rosenthal scored two goals in the 7-2 win while Emma Maltais’ goal in the shootout gave Ohio State the extra league point from the 2-2 G2 tie. An earlier Maltais goal moved her into sixth place in school history with 129 points. Ohio State improves to 17-6-5 (10-4-4 WCHA) on the year.
- Junior goaltender Lynsey Wallace, who is in Ohio State’s Army ROTC program and who has completed its Air Assault School, earned the hockey team’s win this weekend and the tie during the program’s Military Appreciation Game Saturday. She posted 23 saves Saturday, plus had two huge stops in the shootout.
- Ohio State got double-double points-rebounds performances from Dorka Juhasz, Aaliyah Patty and Kierstan Bell and came back from a 15-point halftime deficit to win, 80-74, in overtime yesterday at Nebraska. Braxtin Miller and Rebeka Mikulasikova also scored in double figures for the 12-9, 5-5 Big Ten, Buckeyes.
- Pistol defeated North Dakota State in both open and women’s divisions this weekend in Fargo. School records were broken left and right. The Buckeyes’ 6,708 overall Open total is the highest in Ohio State history as was the open sport and open air scores. Katelyn Abeln and Samuel Gens set individual high marks of 575.
- The women’s gymnastics team set season high scores on vault, uneven bars and balance beam but couldn’t overtake No. 8 Minnesota to fall to 3-2 on the year.
- Fifteen personal bests were set by members of the men’s gymnastics team in a narrow defeat against Michigan on Saturday, including a 15.000 score on floor by Soph. Jesse Tyndall, just the fourth such score in collegiate gymnastics this year.
- Three Buckeyes – seniors Tre Leclaire and Ryan Terefenko and junior Justin Inacio – were among the 18 players named to the Big Ten Conference lacrosse preseason watch list.
- Jr. John McNally, playing at No. 1 for the men’s tennis team, was named Big Ten’s athlete of the week after a 5-0 week last week. He is 15-2 on the season.
- Soph. LHP Seth Lonsway has been named a Second Team Preseason All-American by Collegiate Baseball. The freshman All-American last year went 8-4 with a 3.70 ERA in 92.1 innings pitched over 17 starts and led all Division I freshmen with 126 strikeouts.
- Fr. wrestler Sammy Sasso was named USA Wrestling athlete of the week and the Big Ten’s wrestler of the week after his two, top-4 wins last week including one over the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the land … from Iowa.
- Jr. Shiori Fukuda earned Big Ten athlete of the week accolades for the second week in a row. The nation’s No. 11-ranked tennis player is 18-4 on the season.
- In the wake of 14 digs and 12 kills against USC and UCLA in the Big Ten/Pac-12 challenge, volleyball Fr. Tim Baldwin earned MIVA Defensive Player of the Week honors. His first career start came in the UCLA game.
- Infielder Matt Carpenter and catcher Dillon Dingler have been named captains of the 2020 Ohio State baseball team. They’ve played in a combined 169 games and they lead off the field as well: Carpenter is a four-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and three-time Academic All-Big Ten selection; Dingler is a two-time OSU Scholar-Athlete and a 2019 Academic All-Big Ten selection.
