COLUMBUS, Ohio – In a semester that was anything but common, the Ohio State men’s lacrosse team did something that has become standard for them: they excelled in the classroom.
While the majority of their classes were online and the on-campus experience was greatly changed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Buckeyes adjusted, adapted and excelled. The team posted an overall grade-point average of 3.655 for the semester and has a team cumulative GPA of 3.525. That continues a trend in which the team has posted a higher GPA than the semester preceding it in eight of the last 11 semesters. The Buckeyes have had a GPA over 3.20 for nine consecutive semesters.
Just one semester after setting a team-record with 40 OSU Scholar-Athlete who achieve a 3.0 or higher grade-point average, the Buckeyes topped that mark in the fall as 45 student-athletes earned that distinction. That’s 82 percent of the entire roster. And this might just be the most impressive number of all: 14 student-athletes finished the fall semester with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average.
“Our academic success is a team effort and really starts with our culture,” said head coach Nick Myers. “A great deal of credit goes to our academic advisor in SASSO, Kaitlin Flaherty, and to coach Rick Lewis for helping our men be set up for success, especially during a semester that was so different for them in so many ways. But the biggest credit goes to our players. We’ve recruited players who are excellent students and who have done a great job utilizing the many resources Ohio State has to offer.”
For the freshmen class, which started its academic and athletic experience at Ohio State during unprecedented times, the numbers were especially impressive. All 10 freshmen had a grade-point average of 3.0 or above and eight of the 10 finished with a 3.8 or better.
