Westlund a Winner

Gustaf Westlund of the No. 6 Ohio State men’s hockey team has come up clutch for the squad all season.
The sophomore leads the Buckeyes with 12 goals, ranking second in the Big Ten. He has a team-best four gamewinners to tie for fourth in the NCAA, one behind the national leaders and tops among B1G skaters.
All four of his gamewinners have come with the game tied.
- Oct. 26 at Mercyhurst, he broke a 1-1 tie in the first period in an eventual 3-1 win.
- Nov. 23 at Penn State, Westlund broke a 3-3 tie in the third period with Ohio State holding on for a 4-3 victory.
- Jan. 10 at Wisconsin, he broke a 2-2 deadlock in the second period (1:55 after Wisconsin had tied the score) for a 3-2 Buckeye lead, with Ohio State ultimately winning 4-2.
- Jan. 18 vs. Notre Dame, the teams were tied at 1 in the second period until a Westlund score. Ohio State went on to defeat the Irish, 2-1.
Last Friday vs. Notre Dame, Westlund capped a Buckeye comeback with a goal with 1:05 left in regulation, deadlocking the score at four.
He also has two gamewinning assists, with a helper on Carson Meyer’s overtime score vs. Army Jan. 4 and an assist on Tanner Laczynski’s GWG Dec. 27 vs. Colgate that broke a 2-2 tie with less than four minutes left in regulation.

A native of Stockholm, Sweden, Westlund is second for the Buckeyes with 22 points this season. He has already set career highs for goals (12) and points this year while playing in 23 of 24 games.
Westlund and the Buckeyes take on Minnesota this weekend. Puck drop Friday is at 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET, televised by FS North+, FS Ohio and TSN. Game two is set for 7:30 p.m. CT/8:30 p.m. ET Saturday, televised by BTN. Both games can be seen on the Fox Sports app.
