Ohio State in 6th After Day 1 of NCAA Championships

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Buckeyes finish the first day of the NCAA Championships in 6th place. The Scarlet and Gray racked up a total of 44 team points, one point shy of 5th place .The first day of competition consisted of 3 rounds where each fencer faced 15 opponents.
EPEE
The epee unit led the squad with 18 total victories. Oliver Shindler had an impressive showing, winning all but three of his bouts, topping the leader board. He clutched a first place finish after each of the three rounds. Jack Bradford won 6 total bouts with 45 scored touches, placing in the top 20 for men’s epee.
FOIL
For the foil unit, Nathan Wriedt was victorious in eight of his 15 bouts with a +8 indicator. He finished tenth overall. Leon Cao won two bouts adding to the unit’s overall total of 10.
SABRE
Domenik Koch makes his third appearance on NCAA Championship strips, winning 12 of his 15 bouts. Koch secured a second place finish at the end of day one with a +33 indicator. Roscoe Swartz came out on top 4-15 bouts, finishing the day 24th overall. The sabre unit added 16 points to the squad’s overall total of 44.
NEXT UP
Rounds 4-5 for the men will begin at 9:00 a.m. tomorrow. Semifinals and championship bouts are set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
The women will begin fencing at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and will wrap up competition on Sunday, with semifinal and championship bouts starting at 1:00 p.m.
