Athletics Good Stuff
- Ohio State is the only collegiate athletics program in the nation with a Top 10 football team (#2) and a Top 10 men’s basketball team (#9/10). #GoBucks!
- A terrific cross country season came to a close with the best finish ever for the program: 23rd at the 2019 NCAA Championships, held in Terre Haute, Ind., this past weekend. Leading coach Khadevis Robinson’s Buckeyes on their historic journey: senior Abby Nichols was 41st out of 254 runners. Congratulations team!
- Baseball. Buckeyes. Brotherhood. Oh my! Coach Greg Beals has five Buckeyes on his coaching staff: pitching coach Dan DeLucia, assistant coach Matt Angle, quality control coach Kirby Pellant, and volunteer assistant Brad Goldberg all played for the Scarlet & Gray. Operations director Blair Everhart was a team manager as an undergrad.
- The women’s volleyball team honored these five seniors Friday before the final weekend home matches of the season: Elle Sandbothe, Bia Franklin, Abby Julian, Camry Halm and Madison Smeathers.
- It was a strong effort from the women’s basketball team, which fell to unbeaten and mighty UConn, 73-62, Sunday before nearly 9,000 fans at Value City Arena. Frosh Kierstan Bell led the way with 16 points. Three days earlier the Buckeyes, now 3-2, defeated Kent State, 75-65.
- Men’s hoops is now 5-0 after 25- and 39-point wins last week. Kaleb Wesson and Kyle Young are pounding their way to a combined 22.4 points and 17.6 rebounds per game while frosh guard DJ Carton is contributing 11.2 points with 17 assists. C.J. Walker has a team-high 20 assists and better than a 2-to-1 assist/turnover ratio.
- The pistol team, now 11-0 on the season, defeated Texas A&M on the road in College Station: 6,590-6,412 in the open competition and 3,139-2,405 in the women’s competition.
- The fencers competed at the Garret Penn State Open this past weekend with three individuals securing podium finishes: in men’s sabre, Hudson Santana finished in a tie for third; and in men’s epee, Henry Lange was the runner-up with Bence Bende tying for third. Camilla Rivano, fifth in foil, and Sarah Merza, sixth in sabre, were the top finishers on the women’s side.
- The 16th-ranked men’s swimming and diving team won the Ohio State Invitational over five other schools with 2,436.5 points. Divers Jacob Siler, Lyle Yost and Jacob Fielding swept all three diving events and Paul DeLakis led all Buckeye swimmers in points scored.
- The women’s swimming and diving team defeated seven other programs to win the Ohio State Invitational with 2,518.5 points. Kathrin Demler won four individual races over the three-day event to lead the women’s team.
- Women’s hockey defeated Colgate on the road, 6-2, Friday and got a late goal for a 1-1 tie on Saturday. A trio of scorers – Liz Schepers, Rebecca Freiburger and Emma Maltais – scored two goals apiece in the Friday win. The results improved Ohio State’s record to 9-3-4 overall.
- Men’s hockey split a hard-fought series at Penn State over the weekend, losing 5-4 on Friday and coming back for a 4-3 victory Saturday behind a Gustaf Westlund third period game-winner. No. 11 Ohio State is 7-4-1 on the year, with a 3-3-0-0 Big Ten mark.
- Junior tennis player Luna Dormet is playing for her home country of France in an international college tournament this week. She was the France Under 18 singles national runner-up in 2017.
- Golfer Aneka Seumanutafa has been invited to a practice session in advance of the 2020 Curtis Cup. Seumanutafa is one of 12 players invited to the practice session at Loblolly in Hobe Sound, Fla., Dec. 15-17.
