COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State men's and women's swimming and diving programs lead in three of the four competitions in a three-team, double dual meet against Penn State and Virginia Tech that is being contested over two days at the McCoy Natatorium in University Park, Pa. The meet concludes tomorrow.
Ohio State men 91.70; Penn State men 74.50
Ohio State women 102; Penn State women 65
Ohio State men 70; Virginia Tech men 97
Ohio State women 117; Virginia Tech women 50
"Overall, it was a strong day of performances," Bill Dorenkott, director of men's and women's swimming and diving, said. "A year ago we were a bit flat on day one of this meet. We made a conscious effort to bring strong attitude, effort and energy today."
The Buckeye women, nationally ranked at No. 24 this week, had four first-place performances, starting off with a win in 3-meter diving by Mackenzie Crawford. She was followed in second by Genevieve Angerame.
Kathrin Demler was a double winner, taking first in the 200 fly (2:01.08) and also in the 200 individual medley (2:02.98). Katie Trace was second in both races.
The 400 free relay team of Taylor Petrak, Lucija Jurkovic-Perisa, Kristen Romano and Freya Rayner swam to victory in 3:21.99.
"We had a team meeting a few weeks back with Urban Meyer," Dorenkott said. "Coach talked about the crucible of performance and the idea that pressure filled environments bring out the best in those who desire to be elite. Tonight provided plenty of opportunities to grow and learn."
On the men's side, Ohio State, the No. 8-ranked team in the nation, swept the 1-meter springboard event with Jacob Siler (356.95), Jacob Fielding (343.30) and Joseph Canova (324.70) finishing 1-2-3, respectively.
Carson Burt picked up an Ohio State win in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 9:26.67 while Jason Mathews touched first in the 200 breaststroke. Cameron Craig in the 100 freestyle and RJ Kondalski in the 100 backstroke were runner-up in those events, as was the 200 free relay team comprised of Cameron Craig, Andrew Loy, Matthew Abeysinghe and Joe Pohlmann.
"Tomorrow will be a great opportunity to string together multiple sessions of tough racing," said Dorenkott.
