Buckeyes Finish as Runners-Up at ITA Midwest Regional Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio – At the ITA Midwest Regional Championships in East Lansing, the Ohio State women’s tennis team had a finalist in both singles and doubles. Redshirt junior Shiori Fukuda reached the singles final and paired with junior Luna Dormet to advance to the doubles championship match. As a singles finalist, Fukuda receives an automatic berth in the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships.
Fukuda, ranked 79th, won two matches Monday, posting straight-set wins in both the quarterfinals and semifinals, to advance to the championship match. In the final Tuesday, the Buckeye took on No. 47-ranked Giulia Pairone of Michigan, falling 6-2, 6-4.
Fukuda and Dormet faced Michigan’s Cerdan and Jones in the doubles final Monday. The match was close throughout until the Wolverines pulled away at the end for an 8-5 victory. This is the second year in a row the Buckeye duo of Fukuda and Dormet finished as the doubles runner-up.
In Singles
For the singles main draw, Irina Cantos Siemers, Kolie Allen, Luna Dormet and Shiori Fukuda all earned first-round byes.
In the second round of singles, there was a Buckeye matchup with Danielle Wolf, who won a first-round match, competing against and beating teammate Cantos Siemers. The other three Buckeyes notched wins and joined Wolf in the Round of 16.
Fukuda, Dormet and Allen all won in straight sets in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. Dormet and Allen fell in in the quarterfinals, but Fukuda advanced to the semifinals with a straight-set win. She then took down Michigan’s Andrea Cerdan in another straight-set victory to advance to the final. In the final, Fukuda faced No. 47-ranked Giulia Pairone of Michigan, suffering a 6-2, 6-4 loss. In the second set, Fukuda won three straight games to cut the score to 5-4, but Pairone held to serve out the match.
In Doubles
The Buckeyes had three pairs of doubles in the tournament: Wolf/Mary Beth Hurley, Fukuda/Dormet and Cantos Siemers/Allen. All three duos earned byes for the first round.
Wolf/Hurley earned spots in the quarterfinals after back-to-back victories but fell to Lilien/Waldram of Notre Dame. The Buckeye tandem of Fukuda/Dormet, the tournament’s No. 3 seed, competed in the final after four straight victories, dropping just two games in their quarterfinal and semifinal matches combined Sunday. In the championship match Monday, the Buckeye tandem fell to Cerdan and Jones of Michigan, 8-5.

Up next, select Buckeyes will compete in the ITA Oracle Fall Championships in Newport Beach, Calif., starting Nov. 6. The fall schedule closes at the Arizona State Invitational Nov. 8-10.
