COLUMBUS, Ohio – Joey McKenna earned the 2018-19 season’s first Big Ten Wrestler of the Week laurel, announced by the conference office on Tuesday (Nov. 6). The Buckeye senior captain garnered a pair of victories two time zones apart in a span of less than 24 hours.
McKenna flew out to Denver, Colo., on Thursday in preparation for Friday night’s NWCA All-Star Classic where he was pitted against No. 4 Kaid Brock (Oklahoma State). He ripped off nine unanswered points to finish the top-5 bout and seize an 11-4 triumph. The seven-point margin of victory is tied for the largest by a Buckeye in the event, matching Rex Holman’s 9-2 win over Andy Foster (Oklahoma) in the 1993 190-pound showdown.
McKenna then woke up at 5 a.m. to catch his 7 a.m. flight to Maryland where he would weigh in again Saturday evening for a dual vs. Navy. His 3-2 bout win over Nicholas Gil sealed the deal for Ohio State, clinching what would ultimately become a 28-9 team victory in the season opener.
