COLUMBUS, Ohio – After posting a third consecutive shutout, senior Sean Romeo of the No. 5 Ohio State men’s hockey team was selected the Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. Romeo, a native of Cary, N.C., made 32 saves in a win over Wisconsin Friday.
Romeo is the first Buckeye goalie in program history to post three consecutive shutouts as the starter, backstopping a shutout victory each of the last three Friday nights. It is tied for the fourth-longest streak of shutouts in NCAA history.
Against Wisconsin, Romeo had a season-high 32 saves as the Buckeyes won 4-0, with eight saves in the first period, 10 in the second and 14 in the third. Romeo and the Buckeyes were 6-for-6 on the penalty kill in the win, with 12 of his saves coming on the PK.
The shutout Friday was also the Buckeyes’ third in a row, the second time in program history the squad did not allow a game for three straight contests. Over the last five games, Ohio State had a school-record team shutout streak of 231:42 (passing the old mark of 211:58 set in 2011-12), the 15th-longest streak in NCAA history.
This is the second Big Ten weekly honor for Romeo this season (the third straight for a Buckeye goalie) and the seventh of his Buckeye career. He is tied for the NCAA lead with a career-high three shutouts this year (in six starts).
Romeo and the Buckeyes (8-3-1, 3-1-0-0 B1G) take on No. 6 Penn State in a Big Ten series this weekend in Columbus. The teams will meet at 5 p.m. Friday and 8 p.m. Saturday in Value City Arena.
