KNOW THY OPPONENT
• The University of Michigan was founded in a modest building in what today is downtown Detroit, at the corners of Congress and Bates Streets. When more space was needed, administrators looked to Ann Arbor, where there was a ton of extra land being parceled after the city failed in its bid to become Michigan’s capital.
• James Earl Jones, who provided the iconic voice for Darth Vader’s character, enrolled at Michigan as a pre-med student before switching gears and graduating from the School of Music, Theater, and Dance in 1955.
• John F. Kennedy delivered a speech at 2 am on the steps of the University of Michigan Union as part of his presidential campaign. He talked to the many students that had gathered for his early morning speech about his plans for the US Peace Corps.
• During the 1960s, the university campus was the site of numerous protests against the Vietnam War and university administration. On March 24, 1965, a group of U-M faculty members and 3,000 students held the nation’s first ever faculty-led “teach-in” to protest against American policy in Southeast Asia.
FIVE NOTES TO KNOW
• The winner of this game will represent the Big Ten East Division at the Big Ten championship game Dec. 1 at Indianapolis against Northwestern.
• Since 1951, Woody Hayes’ first season as Ohio State’s head coach, the Buckeyes lead the series 37-27-2. Michigan won 13 of the first 15 games in this series with two ties, but since Ohio State’s first win in 1919 the series tilts in Ohio State’s favor by a 49-45-4 margin.
• Saturday’s game will close the home careers of 12 senior Buckeyes, including the last seven players left from the 2014 national championship squad, all of whom were true freshmen that year.
• J.K. Dobbins could become the first player in Ohio State history to record 1,000-yard rushing seasons as a freshman and as a sophomore. His 203-yard game vs. the Terrapins increased his season total to 915 yards. He had a school-freshman record 1,403 yards rushing last season.
• Ohio State extended its school record of consecutive seasons with 10 or more victories to seven. The streak is currently third-longest nationally.
