Ohio State Eliminated from Big Ten Tournament as Nebraska Advances on Penalty Kicks

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 3 seed Ohio State women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against No. 6 seed Nebraska in a Big Ten quarterfinal match Sunday afternoon at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. However, Nebraska advanced on penalty kicks, 3-2, to the Big Ten semifinals next Friday in Westfield, Ind.
The Buckeyes, now 9-5-4, await their NCAA Tournament fate, which will be determined during the NCAA Selection Show Nov. 5.

“I felt we had the better of play throughout most of the match,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach, said. “Neither team was particularly dangerous in the final third. I thought we controlled the midfield and our defending was solid but our attacking was bland. Nebraska sat and didn’t give our young attack a whole lot of room to play but we have to continue to fight to be more dangerous.”

– Nebraska then opened the second half with its best opportunity of the match as Meg Brandt tried to loft a shot from the top of the box over Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr but the senior was able to deflect the shot off the crossbar before it was cleared away.

– In the 73rd minute, Sarah Roberts flicked a pass through the Husker defense to Talani Barnett, but Corder was again able to come out for the save as the match headed to overtime.
– Each team had an opportunity in the overtime session. In the 100th minute, Blair Cowan hit a shot from 30 yards into the wind but it drilled the crossbar before it was cleared.

– Three minutes later, Nebraska’s Savanah Uveges curled in a cross from the right wing to Faith Carter, but the volley from 12 yards missed wide right.
– Uveges converted her penalty kick for the Huskers in the opening round before Roberts found the top-left corner as it was knotted at 1-1 through two rounds. Nebraska’s Kenzie Coons then finished her penalty kick in the third round before Ohio State’s Haley Walker-Robinson blasted her attempt past Corder and Kerr stopped a Husker penalty kick knot it at 2-2 through four rounds. However, in the fifth round, Corder made a diving save as Izzy Rodriguez tried to finish inside the left post and Natalie Cooke ended it when her penalty kick deflected off the hand of Kerr and the left post before going in.
MATCH NOTES
– The shutout was the eighth of the year for Kerr, which is tied for fifth on the Ohio State single-season list. It was her 19th career clean sheet, which ranks third in Ohio State history.
– Ohio State sits at 1-0-4 on the year in overtime matches.
– The penalty-kick shootout was the first for Ohio State since Nov. 10, 2012. In that NCAA Tournament match, the Buckeyes played to a 1-1 draw before Oakland advanced on penalty kicks, 3-1.
