Ohio State Earns Scoreless Draw against No. 21 Rutgers

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State women’s soccer team played to a scoreless draw against No. 21 Rutgers Friday night at Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Buckeyes sit at 7-5-2 on the year, 4-2-2 in the Big Ten, while the Scarlet Knights are 9-1-5 overall, 5-0-3 in conference play.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH
“We’re happy to walk away with a point, especially after a first half in which we didn’t play particularly well,” Lori Walker-Hock, Ohio State head coach said. “We challenged them at halftime and they came out and were a lot more present and physical. They were connecting passes and doing all the little things so it was an important point for us at this point in conference play. That’s a good Rutgers team and I thought we handled their personality players well and really neutralized them.
MATCH SUMMARY
– After neither team was able to muster many opportunities over the first 45 minutes, Rutgers’ Amanda Visco put her head on a Madison Pogarch free kick from the right wing in the 46th minute but the header from six yards deflected off the crossbar and out of play.
– Five minutes later, Ohio State’s Marissa Birzon possessed just inside the box and laced a left-footed strike from 15 yards that narrowly missed wide left.
– In the 78th minute, Kayla Fischer squared a pass across the top of the box to Eleanor Gabriel but her right-footed shot just slid wide right.
– After the match headed to overtime, Nneka Moneme tracked down a long ball on the right wing in the 95th minute but her shot from 12 yards on the top-right corner of the box missed high and right.
– In the final minute of the first overtime, Gabriel laid a pass off to Sarah Roberts but Rutgers goalkeeper Meagan McClelland ranged to her right to make the diving save on the skipping shot from 20 yards.
MATCH NOTES
– Ohio State moved to 1-0-2 on the year and 9-2-9 in its last 20 overtime matches.
– Ohio State goalkeeper Devon Kerr made a pair of saves to record her seventh shutout of the year and 18th of her career.
– Rutgers recorded 20 shots for the match but the Buckeye defense limited the Scarlet Knights to just two shots on frame.
– Ohio State recognized longtime staff member Larry Romanoff prior to the match against the Scarlet Knights. Romanoff recently retired from Ohio State after almost 50 years in the department.

– The match was the first of two contests played on the program’s Alumni Weekend in Columbus. A large contingent of former Buckeyes was on hand for the match against Rutgers.
