No. 5 Buckeyes Drop Series Opener to Duluth

DULUTH, Minn. — The No. 5 Ohio State University women’s ice hockey team tried to overpower the University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs, but their goaltender had different plans as the Buckeyes lost the series opener 4-1 at AMSOIL Arena on Friday.
The Buckeyes (17-6-4, 10-3-4 WCHA) fell behind early after Katerina Mrázová scored for UMD just over four minutes into the game. Near the midway point of the period the teams were deadlocked at eight shots-on-goal each, but the Buckeyes put the pressure on as the period continued, finishing the first with a 16-to-9 SOG advantage despite trailing 1-0.
Things looked to be changing for Ohio State in the second when Tatum Skaggs lit the lamp for the 17th time this season to tie the game at 1-1. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs scored three straight goals to extend their lead, 4-1.
The Buckeyes put 14 SOG in the third, but couldn’t find the back of the net as the Bulldogs held on to deal OSU the 4-1 loss.
Ohio State finished with a 39-to-28 SOG advantage. Lauren Boyle and Emma Maltais tallied assists on the Skaggs goal in the second.
“For the last five games we haven’t had problems with consistency, but tonight we did,” OSU Head Coach Nadine Muzerall said. “We have to give their goaltender credit; she played amazing out there and kept us from doing what we know we can do. Tomorrow we can hopefully capitalize on our opportunities.”
The Buckeyes wrap up their series with the Bulldogs on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 4:07 p.m. ET.
