
Buckeyes Suffer OT Loss to Bulldogs in NCAA West Regional Semifinal

FARGO, N.D. — No. 4 seed Ohio State men’s hockey team scored twice in the third period to force overtime, but fell to No. 1 seed Minnesota Duluth, 3-2, in the NCAA West Regional semifinal Friday in Scheels Arena.
The loss ends the Buckeyes’ season. The squad was 21-12-6, the most wins since 2009. Ohio State was making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since that season.
The teams were scoreless after the first period, with Ohio State outshooting the Bulldogs, 9-6. Ohio State had a power play goal overturned with 2:59 remaining in the period, with the officials ruling the puck did not cross the line. Nine different Buckeyes blocked a shot in the period.

The Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead 49 second into the second period. After the Buckeyes just missed a chance, Minnesota Duluth’s Dominic Toninato scored on the rush. The Bulldogs had a goal overturned 3:46 into the period, as replay showed the puck did not cross the line. At 13:41 the Bulldogs went ahead 2-0 as a shot by Nick Wolff got through traffic. Shots were 13-11 in favor of the Bulldogs in the period. Ohio State was unable to score on one power play chance, putting two shots on net, and Minnesota Duluth had a late chance carry over into the third.

The Buckeyes got on the board at 7:09 of the third period. Dakota Joshua won the puck along the board to Kevin Miller. Matt Joyaux jumped in the lane, took a pass from Miller and scored. The second goal came from freshman Gordi Myer at 12:40, his first career tally, scoring off a pass from classmate Tanner Laczynski. Ohio State outshot Minnesota Duluth 13-6 in the period. Ohio State had one power play chance, with a second that carried into overtime. The Bulldogs’ only power play opportunity was the one that carried over from the second.

Ohio State carried play through the first half of overtime, but the Bulldogs notched the winner at 11:58 when Willie Raskob one-timed a shot. The Buckeyes put nine shots on net in overtime, and the Bulldogs scored on their seventh shot on goal of the extra period.
Blocking the Puck
The Buckeyes outshot the Bulldogs, 42-32, in the game. Senior goalie Matt Tomkins had 29 saves in 71:55 in the Buckeye net. He leads the B1G with a 2.48 goals-against average.
The Bulldogs’ Hunter Miska had 40 saves in 71:58.
Ohio State blocked 29 shots in the game, led by Janik Moser with five and Tommy Parran with four.
Special Teams
Ohio State was held scoreless on four power play chances in the game, just the second time in the last 10 games the team did not convert on the power play. On the year, the Buckeyes were 49-for-155 on the power play, converting an NCAA-best 31.6 percent of their chances.
The penalty kill was 2-for-2 in the game and ended the year 6-for-6 in the last two games combined.

The ended the career for seven Buckeye seniors — Drew Brevig, Logan Davis, Christian Frey, David Gust, Josh Healey, Nick Schilkey and Matt Tomkins. They were the first Buckeye senior class to compete all four years in the Big Ten Conference.
